That disappoints you? That's what makes US bacon so tasty! Smoked foods are the foods of the gods. You could smoke a turd, and I'd ask for seconds.

Yes this disappoints me. I don't really like anything smoked. :P

I live for smoked foods and spicy foods. Smoked fish and smoked bbq being particular favourites. *drool*

Anyway, sounds like you're a supertaster. Also sounds like you already know that, but for those who don't it's really interesting stuff. Sorta shatters the myth that all picky eaters are just people being too fussy. As someone who can eat pretty much anything, I found it very enlightening when I heard about it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supertaster

"A supertaster is a person who experiences the sense of taste with far greater intensity than average.... The cause of this heightened response is currently unknown, although it is thought to be, at least in part, due to an increased number of fungiform papillae. The evolutionary advantage to supertasting is unclear. In some environments, heightened taste response, particularly to bitterness, would represent an important advantage in avoiding potentially toxic plant alkaloids. However, in other environments, increased response to bitterness may have limited the range of palatable foods. In a modern, energy-rich environment, supertasting may be cardioprotective, due to decreased liking and intake of fat. It may be a cause of picky eating, but picky eaters are not necessarily supertasters, and vice versa."

I don't know that I'm a supertaster really, I still like eating fat. :P But yes, I've always had a liking for what others call 'plain' cooking. However, since I had flu early last year my sense of smell and taste has not returned to normal yet. :( I used to have a VERY sensitive sense of smell indeed.

Mmmmm... faaaaat.

Sound like you might be towards that end of the, um, spectrum I guess?

I lost my sense of smell and taste earlier this year because of a nasty cold virus thingy and I panicked that it wouldn't return. I wouldn't be able to cope!

Hope yours comes back soon.

It's 90% back, I just seem to have lost the refinements. Maybe it'll take getting another winter cold or something to clear it out. :P I've read that sometimes it can disappear for months, even a year or two and then return.

I had my ears syringed today. Jesus wept, and here I thought I was good at cleaning wax (with tissues or solution, I don't care for q-tips). Looked like a couple of beetles had lodged into my ears, especially the left (which I just thought was swollen from infection). My ears are fine now, and I will remember to be more thorough in future.

Oh man, I have to have that done relatively often due to a medical condition (not 'cause I'm a dirty ho, honest) and find it actually quite theraputic. Having your ears flushed with warm water is pretty naaaais.

I have a tiny tear in my right eardrum, if I get any water in there I'd probably faint :P Hooray for bodged ears!

Now I got a guy on his way to help with the polycarve, I told him I'd give him anything he wants for dinner to say thanks, he wants fishfingers and I have none! FFFFF have to trek to ASDA in the cold.
