Their little unnecessary stop-off in Ireland nearly left two of them dead, so we're getting lots of brownie points amongst the Opeth haters at the moment for at least trying to do something about them.

its not that i hate them. its just that theyre just so painfully boring, but everyone worships them as pioneers and every metal head kid owns an opeth t-shirt which also annoys me. i think alot of people are under the impression that because they have very vintage cover art and that their songs go for 10 minutes that they are deep and meaningful. bah, my 2 cents as usual...

I never got into them, for the same reason that I never got into most of the proggy-prog stuff. They can't keep it interesting, and a ten minute song sounds like all their other ten minute songs.

Aka "this is horrible, people like the band I don't like, how's it even possible"

I think it's pretty easy to explain the thing in half-objective way: Opeth filled the rather-empty niche for 10 minute song playing, bit technical death metallish bands with 70s progressive bits and good vocals (performing their music whilst not looking like absolute tits - that bit is important as well I think). It may be hard to understand, but there are people who like this kind of shit. Don't think there's many bands in that cricles, dunno, maybe Green Carnation?

That's fine. I like Opeth.

But a good portion of their fans that I've met are pretentious pricks.

But that's a lot of prog rock/metal fans in general that I've met.

When I saw em at the roundhouse there was a guy who said he was gonna smack me if i didn't stop headbanging. At a metal gig. You fucking WUUUUUT!?

Great gig otherwise though, just wish it was with the classic lineup.

Imo Opeth lost it after Blackwater Park, I think maybe they strayed too far from the sound that made them great. And I hate the way they use keyboards. :( They have turned into un-awesome.

I definitely agree on the prog fans comment. Every one I've met around here is most definitely a prick. Always standing by one album (typically an older one from any band) saying it will always be their best, etc.

They also seem to always wear The Faceless, Cynic, or Opeth shirts to every show.

And yea, everyone knows I love Opeth and I have their shirts...I just like their music.

No.

But statements like "You don't understand it" or "It might be too complex/advanced for you" kill me. It's like they think odd time signatures reverse the effects of global warming.

You should all be more modest. Like me.

Thoughts that never pass through the minds of Devfans in their dealings with the great unwashed.

I'll admit to being guilty of using the "you just don't understand it" argument. I like to use it when people have no legitimate reason to say they hate a band.

They don't NEED a legitimate reason. Personal taste is personal taste.

If someone says they hate something, I always ask why.

Just out of curiousness.

Plus it's interesting watching people form words as to why they hate something.

What counds as 'legitimate' reasons anywhoo?

That's fine. Some people are good at self-analysis for that. Some people aren't. But that doesn't negate their right to dislike something.

Also, it's "Curiosity" Amber, not "Curiousness".
