As far as the Fountain goes, I absolutely agree with your statement, I feel like The Fountain is where Aronofsky found the tone he was searching for but restrained himself a little bit for the better of the film.

I liked Requiem for a Dream, but it SCREAMED independent film-maker self importance which is one of the things I can't stand about generally decent independent cinema. And don't get me started on how Pi was great for a first effort but seriously, shut the fuck up, it does not change the universe despite having plenty of cool aspects about it.

Sometimes I hate living in San Francisco.

Regardless of its praise, I don't think I would have loved Avatar. I probably wouldn't have disliked it as much as I do if no one had ever heard of it, let alone glorified it. I'm more or less in that category (I'd tend toward less, I think).

Dead on about Pi and RfaD, by the way.

I just rewatched Inglorious Basterds. MY GOD, does that film get better upon a repeat viewing.

Studying Hans Landa is something I'm going to do more of in the future, may Waltz get all he deserves for putting through one of the best performances I've ever seen. Absolutely captivating, and this is to say nothing of the rest of the film which is a wonderful Tarantino work. Easily his best film since Pulp Fiction.

AlucardXIX wrote:Different kind of villain. Ledger played a complete psychopath far too well. Landa was just a conniving/cunning German officer who was almost too smart for his own good. Gotta love the end of the movie!

I'm with you on the Joker, but I think you might be short-changing the Hans Landa character a little in terms of villainous behaviour. At least the one I watched - without wanting to post spoilers, I thought he was a stone-cold, manipulative, brilliant villian who exhibited more genuine and classic psychopathic behaviour than Ledger's beautifully over-the-top, savage Joker.

That aside, I thought the performance was genius from start to finish (and in at least four languages!). Give that man an Oscar.

Agree with you on the ending - cracked me up!

i thought it was great but i have to a agree with you. theyre making it out to be the greatest movie ever when its just an enjoyable watch. if the visual effects werent used the way they were in it i highly doubt the movie would have been so successful

I think that's maybe the point though. An overly-complex plot would have detracted from the visuals in my estimation. Maybe we're all too jaded and cynical and if a plot doesn't fold back on itself at least six times we dismiss it as being too simplistic these days.

I don't think it's the best movie ever made either, far from it in fact, but I enjoyed it for the fantasy it portrayed so well and it deserves to be up there as something rather visually stunning. It's not going to appeal to everybody that's for sure. Not everyone enjoys sci-fi or fantasy or computer animation - those folks are going to be left cold by it no matter what.

Sherlock. The first half hour really dragged and made me think I was in for a long and boring ride but it picked up. I don't know about Sherlock Holmes being a karate master but it was a solid movie.

I also saw The Hangover, but I can't remember any of it so I'll have to watch it again.

As will those who do enjoy the "sci" part of "sci-fi." A lot of questionable hand-waving in that film, which (honestly) is a large part of why I was so peeved with it.

Well there ye go! You have to think of these things as fairytales, like Cinderella. You don't hear too many people questioning how the fairy godmother made the glass slippers and turned the mice into footmen or why it all had to end at midnight. 8)

Well, those things are all very logical, so people see no need to question them. Duh.

Anyway, I dislike that it's "sci-fi" when there's really nothing "sci" about it. Fantasy, sure. I'm not even that big a fan of sci-fi novels/films, but that movie just made me want to whine about far too many trivial points for me to enjoy it in the long run.

the plot is the most important part of the film. it should always come first though. films dont have to be complex either. look at the wrestler for instance. its just a dude living his life but its amazing. this was very 'standard war movie' in my eyes. i also worry that in the future when CGI becomes even further advanced that it wont impact its audience as much as it did
