Sucker Punch - in glorious, non-IMAX 2D.
Pros: Zach Snyder's layered direction from a gray & bleak tale to a 50s gangster drama and back was well handled, with some good performances, and bad guys you love to hate. Emily Browning as Baby Doll gave a decent performance, and the other girls were also good for the most part. Seeing Carla Gugino as a Russian dance mistress was quite fun.
Cons: the rest of the movie, being the fantasy/dance sequences, turned into a giant video game that someone else was playing. It was like he picked a few PS3 games off a shelf, thought "these would make cool scenes", threw in some anime fetish, and there you have it; I'm only grateful there were no HUD's or life bars (giant robo-rabbit doesn't really count). Still, I didn’t mind Scott Glenn’s character, which was like a homage to David Carradine.
Going back to a post I made earlier, from what I read, Snyder toned the content down and in doing so cut a few crucial scenes to get a lighter rating. While this certainly pushes the boundary of its PG-13 rating, for fuck's sake, there was no shame in getting an R and having a (possibly) more coherent story and ultimately better movie, video game scenes notwithstanding. At least the music wasn't bad, although I personally would have left out that awful remix of "We Will Rock You".
Hopefully its eventual director's cut will be better viewing.

Old, but I saw 3:10 to Yuma recently. As someone who doesn't generally enjoy westerns, I have to say I really loved this one.

...of course it MIGHT just have been because Christian Bale was in it as I have a strange fondness for him, but having said that I've rarely watched any movie specifically because he's in it (Won't watch American Psycho for instance.)

I think for me it was just the right amount of action + headgames for me to keep me interested, and even though I dislike Russel Crowe he did a pretty darn good job. *thumbs up*

Why not? :D

And thanks for the review on Sucker Punch (why do I always wanna call it Sugar Punch?) I think I'll pass that one, for now.

Sin City I've wanted to watch it for ages, and it was duly amazing. Me and my friend were laughing because of the sheer epicness, I loved the colours (mostly black and WHITE (not grey, cartoon colours) but still live action, it's comic book style colouring and really eye catching in a movie), loved the total comic-book style right down to the shots, and ESPECIALLY the acting and the way the characters were talking, you could almost see the text bubbles, and the melodramatic lines! The story is pretty much about 3/4 smaller plots really putting the point to the name, this city is full of some major sin. Plus I think Elijah Wood is in it solely because of his EYES :D

Watch it if you like comics, action + cheesyness

I know enough about it to know it's not for me.

Also, I am squeamish. Very squeamish. Just when it comes to movies. I can handle it in videogames, but not movies. Dunno why.

I have the opposite problem. I know too well what goes into making movies, and can't suspend my disbelief enough to enjoy the visceral nature of things as a I should.

That is a problem :( I think I prefer being replused to the point of dry retching over things like 'In Bruges' (which is a FANTASTIC movie imo, minus the icky stuff) than feeling nothing about it lol. I think I have too vivid an imagination and it's a little too 'realistic' in movies for me, as opposed to games where I know it's not real people.

I saw "In Bruges" with Keeker, and that movie was pretty awesome, if entirely messed up.

Big fan of In Bruges right here. Brilliant film.

Saw Sucker Punch on the weekend. What a shitty waste of an opportunity. Terrible film.

The actors were the only enjoyable element, doing their best to make the most of weak-arsed movie.

Yep, that's quite a good one. My daughter is gradually collecting Ghibli movies.
