Sucker Punch - in glorious, non-IMAX 2D.
Pros: Zach Snyder's layered direction from a gray & bleak tale to a 50s gangster drama and back was well handled, with some good performances, and bad guys you love to hate. Emily Browning as Baby Doll gave a decent performance, and the other girls were also good for the most part. Seeing Carla Gugino as a Russian dance mistress was quite fun.
Cons: the rest of the movie, being the fantasy/dance sequences, turned into a giant video game that someone else was playing. It was like he picked a few PS3 games off a shelf, thought "these would make cool scenes", threw in some anime fetish, and there you have it; I'm only grateful there were no HUD's or life bars (giant robo-rabbit doesn't really count). Still, I didn’t mind Scott Glenn’s character, which was like a homage to David Carradine.
Going back to a post I made earlier, from what I read, Snyder toned the content down and in doing so cut a few crucial scenes to get a lighter rating. While this certainly pushes the boundary of its PG-13 rating, for fuck's sake, there was no shame in getting an R and having a (possibly) more coherent story and ultimately better movie, video game scenes notwithstanding. At least the music wasn't bad, although I personally would have left out that awful remix of "We Will Rock You".
Hopefully its eventual director's cut will be better viewing.
