another good example is Peter Jackson's Braindead/Dead Alive Blu-Ray release. It will be the R-rated version which is missing a whole lot of the stuff that made Braindead so awesome...GUTS and GORE! And we may never see the fully uncut unrated verstion on Blu-ray because Peter Jackson prefers the R-rated cut. Well, that's great....it's just that I prefer Braindead to be as gorey as possible!

I prefer the Criterion approach. My Brazil box-set has the fucking "Love Conquers All" version. If Terry Gilliam can allow THAT, and Ridley Scott can have a billion different Blade Runners, then the rest of these directors who think they know better can allow a set with their preferred version to co-exist with the others.

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I'm pro the director having a choice, but there's something to be said when there's such a vocal group that wants to see the original version, a la Star Wars, that there should be an option for them to see the damn movies they loved so much.

I shan't buy the films before that happens.

I actually really enjoyed it. I'm probably just a Jeff Bridges fanboy but I didn't know the dude can play guitar that well and actually sing, so I was pretty impressed.

You should check out the country album he just released. I hate country, and it's pretty darn good. But maybe cuz I'm a Jeff Bridges fanboy too.

And yes... George Lucas is completely removed from the rest of humanity and thinks everything he shits out is gold. Hench Jar Jar Binks in three movies because he liked him. He doesn't give a piss about the fans so he'll continue to destroy Star Wars until he croaks.

exactly. And when it comes to Brazil, I hope Criterion release a box set like that on Blu-ray too. The current BD release of Brazil from Universal doesn't even have any bonus material on it as far as I know. And I do own the Blade Runner Ultimate Collector's Edition box set too and appreciate it, I don't mind if a box set costs a little more than usual if I can watch my preferred version of that movie. Dark City is another good example. The Blu-ray contains both the theatrical cut and the director's cut. Or the Terminator 2 Blu-ray with three different versions of the movie on it. Seamless branching makes it possible!

Hope Lucas didn't completely ruin the movies. Just couldn't force myself to order the complete box with all 6 movies because I really do not like the episodes I-III at all.

No is right. It's not as bad as I imagined, but Vader should stay silent - that's what gives the scene it's power; this tweaked version makes it unintentionally funny.

And I know one major movie buff who cancelled his blu ray order on the basis of this noooooo bullshit. I know we're all obsessive fans and all that shit, but even so I too will think long and hard about financially rewarding George Lucas for his descent into stupidity.

Ok 3 things. I like most of the little changes Scott made for the latest version of Blade Runner. Except for changing I want more life... FUCKER to 'father'. I understand why and it fits into the context of the conversation but it just loses all that oomph. The original line was a sharp glimpse of the savagery Batty was about to unleash on his creator.

That's what I want to see, considering I've only ever seen the 97 minute cut (repeated VHS rental).

Maybe, but it's a New Zealand movie, and they use PAL, so there's no reason an Australian distributor couldn't get the material. Sucks that Germany's classification laws are still that far behind though.

I'm in the same boat as you, wyrm, having only ever seen the old VHS rental version. I remember the first time I saw it, I laughed and cheered so hard I have myself a headache.

I will say the first time I saw it, the custard scene put me off the stuff for a couple of weeks.

Last movies I saw tonight: Rise of the Planet of the Apes & X-Men: First Class, double feature.
Granted Rise had great reviews, I could not put Tim Burton's misfire out of my mind. All style, little substance, and I was dreading it might be more of the same here, although the trailer was promising. I decided to give it a go, and I'm glad I did. I must admit the CG apes had more emotional depth than the people in makeup in the last few Apes films, and I'll even agree with the hype in saying this might be the best Apes movie since the original (or at least Beneath the Planet of the Apes). What's most impressive is that the human drama is equally believable, and even the more hammy scenes could still be taken seriously enough. The references to the original film are also played here with skill, rather than being gags like they were with the previous remake. Hopefully the eventual follow up will be just as good.

X-Men: First Class also qualifies as a best since the original, if not better. Well acted, well told, and James McEvoy & Michael Fassbender truly make their roles their own, and each are mesmerizing. Kevin Bacon can do no wrong as a bad guy, although the helmet doesn't look as awesome on him as it does Fassbender. Cameos from past cast members were welcome and amusing. I actually wouldn't mind seeing another prequel film to bridge the gap between this and the first film, as this proves it can work (the ending leaves no doubt about it). Another good night at the Astor.

Watching Banshee fly in that movie was one of the coolest things I've seen in a comic flick

stranger than fiction im a sucker for emma thompson, i was surprised by ferrell's performance, he's like jim carrey without the silly faces.

500 days of summer im also a sucker for zooey deschanel, good flick.
