Now lets just hope that the game gives you the sense of scale ME1 did. I highly doubt it will, I'm sure it will be more combat focused like the second game, but we can always hope...

Best game to drink beer while playing. First, you get into horrific crashes. Secondly, you learn not to drink and drive (despite what Brocas Helm may tell you) due to the horrific crashes.

The new Need for Speed hot pursuit was made by the same guys and it shows, it's a pretty good game too.
I really liked Burnout Paradise.

I'm curious to know, am I the only one who's finding the realism of battlefield 3 kind of disturbing ?

I don't know if I'm focusing too much on the visual (and hence the violence), and kind of forgetting the "play" part, but I see lot of "woah !" " awesome !" comments and I'm just like "meeeh :/".

For a while now I've been doing a difference between real world violence and fantasy/SF violence. Whole units being thrown in the air and ripped apart by a 20ft high possessed machine in dawn of war isn't a problem, and I used to spray blood and scatter limbs happily in Quake 3, but when I see battlefield, all I can think is "is this fun anymore ? is it what we call a game ?"

I don't know if I'm unconsciously making a hypocrite opinion by leaving what I prefer (SF/fantasy) out of this thought, but while I used to make fun of anyone who blames video games for generating violence "directly", and while I wouldn't go to that extent, I must say I wonder if unconsciously it doesn't slowly make the idea of guns and war and violence just more common, accepted.
Of course there has been violent movies for a while, but maybe video games take it a step further by making you the "actor", even more so with FPS.
I haven't played Deadspace, but I'm fine with the concept. With battlefield, it just seems too close to the ugliness of the real world that I just can't find that fun. I remember when I played medal of honor 4 I think, which was taking the realism a step further back then, I shot an enemy in the knee and he dropped his gun and was doing that kind of face  while falling, and I wasn't shocked per say, but I was already wondering "man, am I supposed to find that fun ?".
One could say it could work the other way, that a realistic war game could eventually give a somehow real idea of how ugly war really is, and that it's not a game.

I must say also that globally I now have a problem with video games in the fact that the easiest way to create one is to have the player kill/destroy. Simple as that. The processor can get rid of those datas and on to the next enemy, next level.
As soon as you want to make things more intricate, less manichean, give a choice to the player, multiple scenarios, the game becomes exponentially more complex (except for what I would call "different" games, like puzzle games, weird games, artistic games, etc...), the budget skyrockets and the developers are screwed.
A friend was telling me about how MMO games have sort of slowed the research on A.I., as those once useful A.I. were replaced by players all around the world.

Does SYL gives me enough cathartic effect that I don't feel the need to destroy - virtually - anymore ?
Or am I just thinking too much ? :P

you're not thinking too much about it at all. Although I'm totally against censorship in games and love games that are incredibly violent and over the top gorey like Mortal Kombat I sometimes too wonder what the limitations are or if there are any limitations anymore.
There's been scenes in the last 2 COD games where I thought "well, I don't think that was necessary". I think developers of those über-realistic looking war games just do anything they can for shock value nowadays. Whoever creates the biggest controversy wins. And if you win that battle, you will also win the profit battle because people will buy the most controversial game. And the sad part is, all these games are the same thing over and over again. I mean, let's face it...if you know one COD game then you know them all. They just got more and more controversial but when you take away the controversial parts the same stuff as always remains.

A lot of guys I've worked with who actually do go into combat for a living love playing games like this. The more real, the more they like it. You'd think they'd want to get away from that, but no.... It's a strange thing. Having said that, I really want to play BF3.

Duke Nukem may appeal to me, Serious Sam appealed to me, Postal appeals to me. And yet Battle of Medal Field Honor 1942 - Halo Gear Duty does nothing for me. Seems like the more over-the-top a shooter becomes, the better I like it.

Played Limbo in the pub last night. OH. MY. GOD. What a fucking game. Absolutely beautiful. I've been wanting to play it for so long. How I wish it was on the PSN as well as XBLA...

Mortal Kombat and Portal 2 both getting rave reviews, by the looks of things. And I have neither the money nor the free time to afford to buy either.
