I'm still waiting for my Kollector's Edition of MK...I so can't wait!

edit: oh and I played the Gears of War 3 beta thanks to My epic edition of Bulletstorm. It's a lot of fun and it certainly looks like GOW3 will yet look even better than GOW2 did. Better textures, a nice and smooth frame rate. I'm impressed!

I both love and hate this thread - and really, I only hate it because it reminds me how much work I have coming up, haha.

Portal 2 looks awesome. I didn't actually play Portal myself, but I watched my partner play through it in its entirety, to show me the Cake is a Lie thing and the song at the end - I think if I'd played it myself I'd have thrown my controller out a window in frustration, so if I buy #2 I'll be making my man play it, hahaha :P

One thing I preordered yesterday that is going to be likely my fave release of the year (considerin' it's not supposed to be out until November) is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

I loved Oblivion, I got so very sucked into that game - although I'm more than willing to admit it had more than its fair share of godforsaken bugs and glitches. Skyrim looks like Bethesda's not only fixed that issue with the engine but it's drastically improved it. Every time I read a new article about that game, I get super excited. I have no idea if it's been talked about already in here because I'm loath to backtrack through posts, but yeah...don't think anything's going to be more interesting to me this year, though I might be surprised! ;)

Portal 2 is pretty awesome so far. The humor is great, possibly one of the funniest games I've ever played. And I can only remember one, maybe two cake references!

Falk wrote:I'm curious to know, am I the only one who's finding the realism of battlefield 3 kind of disturbing ?

I don't know if I'm focusing too much on the visual (and hence the violence), and kind of forgetting the "play" part, but I see lot of "woah !" " awesome !" comments and I'm just like "meeeh :/".

For a while now I've been doing a difference between real world violence and fantasy/SF violence. Whole units being thrown in the air and ripped apart by a 20ft high possessed machine in dawn of war isn't a problem, and I used to spray blood and scatter limbs happily in Quake 3, but when I see battlefield, all I can think is "is this fun anymore ? is it what we call a game ?"

Count me in. I consider video game an escapist fantasy, and photorealistic Iraqi war porn isn't my kind of fantasy - I find this kind of stuff a little bit disturbing. Like you know, this quite recent COD commercial "there's soldier in every one of us" painting war as a shit-ton of harmless fun. Which would be more bearable if it wasn't created to look in such realistic manner.

It looks kind healthier if it's with alien robots or something, not a realisitic portrayal of some miserable, fucked up part of modern world created solely for entertainment of the first world customers. Actually little commie pinko in me wants to shout "is it a fucking advertisement for war and armed forces or what!?" every time I see it.

Yeah it might be a bit hypocritical, I don't help the world in any way by playing one game instead of the other, but it still feels better to me that way.

Falk wrote:I must say also that globally I now have a problem with video games in the fact that the easiest way to create one is to have the player kill/destroy. Simple as that. The processor can get rid of those datas and on to the next enemy, next level.
As soon as you want to make things more intricate, less manichean, give a choice to the player, multiple scenarios, the game becomes exponentially more complex (except for what I would call "different" games, like puzzle games, weird games, artistic games, etc...), the budget skyrockets and the developers are screwed.
A friend was telling me about how MMO games have sort of slowed the research on A.I., as those once useful A.I. were replaced by players all around the world.

Yeah, also ambitious games tend to be buggy as fuck, it's much safer to achieve something simple. Good point about MMOs too.

Falk wrote:Or am I just thinking too much ? :P

Nope.

In other news, Crysis 2 was surprisingly fun. I was in for good ol' dumbed-down-for-console bashing, but they actually pulled it off. Granted, it is considerably downsized compared to Crytek's earlier games and has nothing on Crysis' technological magnifience, but single player campaign was really lenghty and white, shiny, pink blooded aliens (I'm sure there were Svarovsky crystals in there somewhere as well) were much funnier to shoot than the anonymous flying octopuses from the previous games. Sure it would be even better with destructiveness, wider maps, parallax mappings, detailed lighting and stuff, but I really can't be picky, it's really good production.

(but plz Crytek, lose the lame quick time events next time. And more doors I can actually open)

best collector's edition of a game EVAAAARRRRRR. And cheaper than expected. The customs folks didn't get their dirty lil fingers on this :D

Man, this game is GREAT. It's everything you'd want an MK game to be. If you're a fan by any means then do yourself a favor and get this game. Sell your body to get the money for it if necessary!

My favorite edition of Mortal Kombat was the Sega CD one because it included an obscene number of mixes of "Techno Syndrome." Plus I think that was the one where I found a bug and managed to use Scorpion's fatality on Shang Tsung. It only happened once but I felt so vindicated against that shape-shifting scum.

Saturns are rad. There's some great stuff on there only for that system.

That's why I grabbed two. Nights and Guardian Heroes alone are worth the purchase, never mind Radiant Silvergun and some of the enhanced versions of 2D games from the PS1. Now all I need to do is Snag a RAM upgrade cart.

Oh that's nais. Very, very nais. I'm contemplating whoring myself out (more than I already do, but you know all about that honey buns  ) to afford it. My PS3 collection lacks a good fighting game and this looks like a lovely one to fill the gap.

it's absolutely worth it. I dug deep into it the past 2 days. Played the arcade mode, the story mode and the challenge tower mode.
The arcade mode is fun as ever. And it seems like this is actually a MK game that you can also beat even if you're not a pro. That was the only thing that really sucked about MK trilogy for example, it was almost impossible to beat, no matter which difficulty you played it on. And the endings are nicely done for each character. There's no fully rendered movies or anything, instead it's comic book like endings but they are nicely done, much better than they were in MK vs DC.
The story mode is really good. Yes, it is a little cheesy but I personally think it works perfectly for the MK universe and I think this is the best attempt so far to add a story to a beat 'em up game. You can actually see that the makers of the game actually thought about the story and actually the story in this video game is better than both actual MK movies together. Took me about 4 hours to get through the story mode and that is a pretty good length for a fighting game.
The challenge tower is really fun too. There's 100's of little challenges to get through and they are actually a lot of fun and mostly unique. I remember one where you could only hurt your opponent by throwing your own body parts at him

I'd like to play this new mortal kombat, but I suck at any fighting game not called Soul Calibur, so it would be a 60$ investment in frustration.
As a resort, I bought the old Starcraft and have been having a blast playing it. It helps that I'm playing some table top RPG of Warhammer 40k
