Watched Oblivion and it looked absolutely beautiful.

A beautiful-to-look-at, derivative piece of crap.

Sweet Jesus, could you come up with an original idea, Kosinski?

I won't spoil anything, but suffice it to say that if you like science fiction films you won't see ANYTHING new here. It looks great and Tom Cruise is just Tom Cruise by numbers so if you hate him you'll hate him here etc. etc. 2 hours of sci-fi eye candy, basically. That was fine in Tron, as it was so damned stylish and, hey... it's Tron. It's not trying to be anything more than that. But this is so deadly serious and yet offers nothing to be serious about.

Spoiler: show
Oh, and Moon and Wall-E both still fucking rule so screw you Kosinski. Try harder, man.

hmm, I liked Oblivion. It's not the most original piece ever made, sure. And yes,
Spoiler: show
Moon definitely came to my mind when I watched it.
But at least it's not Battleship. Or Transformers 2. Or Lockout. Definitely more style than substance though. But that's fine as long as it's done well and this one was, me thinks.

Anywhoo...watched World's Greatest Dad and Everything Must Go the other day. Both really great movies. World's Greatest Dad in particular was just plain awesome. Despite the cameo of Robin Williams's weenie.

Yeah I think I just expected more... I had quite high hopes for Oblivion and all I saw was cliche after cliche.
Spoiler: show
True, it's not a complete turd like Battleship. I try really hard not to be jaded. I do my best to suspend my disbelief and you could even say I'm pretty easy to please, but the influences were so completely obvious that it completely distracted me from the movie. Even the soundtrack veered far too close to the Tron soundtrack, without the Daft Punk goodness.

This guy scratches the surface of what bothered me:

I'll give Kosinski credit for his visuals though.
Spoiler: show
Those panoramic shots were gorgeous.

well, and actually...this movie is based on an unpublished graphic novel that he did in 2005. So it's quite possible that all the stuff in this movie was already in his comic book, quite a few years before
Spoiler: show
Moon
was out.

That would be fair enough.

Spoiler: show
2005 would also be pre- WALL-E. But not quite pre-all-those-other-movies he "references". It may be that I'm still a little bitter about Moon not getting the credit it deserves

I think I need another movie to wipe MY memory.

Wings, a 1920's film about pilots in World War I.
The version I saw was a restored print with the original music score re-recorded (and reworked); the black and white also had some interesting coloration done it as well, changing hues from warm sepia to cold blue-gray to suit the scenes.
It also featured some pretty realistic dog-fighting and war violence, more extreme than you'd might expect from a film shot so long ago, as well as great performances. If you like watching old silent film, this one is worth checking out.

Saw Kick-Ass 2 last night and really enjoyed it despite it being pretty massively flawed. Trivialising rape, blatantly sexualising 15 year old girls and disastrously underusing Jim Carrey aside, it's an enjoyable way to kill an hour and a half if you like a bit of violence and/or wanking it to 15 year old girls. Chloe Moretz actually pretty much carries this whole film despite kinda being a bit-part player, yer man who plays Kick Ass is even more annoying than in the first film and the McLovin guy is as one-dimensional as ever. I can kinda pick more bad things than good but I still really enjoyed it..? It's not quite as good as the first one. The will-he-quit, won't-he-quit thing has obviously been done to death in comic books and comic book films so the plot kinda plodded. The action sequences are still excellent though, and the massive fight at the end is really good, although again not as good as the whole jet-pack shoot-out at the end of the first film. And seriously, film people, give Hit Girl her own movie... just wait two years till she's 18 so the sexy shit won't feel so creepy.

Rewatching "Fight Club" was a blast. If you've only seen it once, I recommend giving it a second go. Picking up on all the small cues and hints was a lot of fun. If you haven't seen it at all, for god's sake do!
