So with all of the space talk on the TV thread, I thought it would be a good idea to create a science thread. Here we can all post nifty knowledge nuggets, favorite clips, breakthrough news and such.
and to set the mood:

Not science, but a good theme for this thread.
If this exists already, sorry. I did a quick search and didn't see a thread.

If anyone hasn't seen "The Music Instinct: Science and Song" check it out. It's really great.

From The Sagan Series facebook page:
"NASA announced today that the first human-made object to reach interstellar space is now officially NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft.
Well beyond the orbit of Pluto, Voyager has been travelling for over 36 years and is about 12 billion miles from our sun. Here's to the unknown!"

How long it's taken her only increases my wonder at the sheer scale of the galaxy, let alone the universe.
Incidentally, 666 pages in the recent purchases thread, you're one away from 666 posts and it's Friday the 13th here. Praise Jesus!

Interesting article on
climate change in the Arctic Sea by The Guardian, which also blasts the Daily Mail for (unsurprisingly) misreporting the actual impact.

So, if there was any doubt about the mindset of Australia's new PM, he's kept the position of minister for sport yet abolished the position of science minister.
Gah.

Gah.
One of the many reasons he deserves to be buried alive in a stinking pile of shit.
Anyway, here's an article released today on
bionic eyes, and how the technology is restoring sight to those who had lost it completely.

Regardless of your thoughts on the "debate", this is very well made:

That's actually pretty smart. It would remove the huge disconnect between everyday decisions and the consequenses they have. Environmentalist should give faces to their enemies.

These kind of discussions are so fascinating. I love thinking about ideas like "nothing" or "smallest possible amount of distance or time" or whatever on my own but these people can actually rationalize to their views on insane ideas like that. Love it. Anyone know anything similar to the Asimov Memorial Debate?

From the Sagan Series on Facebook:
Congrats NASA! Today #MAVEN successfully launched. It will arrive at Mars in 10 months.
MAVEN will study Mars' atmosphere and climate history, and reveal why Mars went from a wet, warm, habitable world to a cold and relatively dry one. Understanding climate change on Mars may give us Earthlings a better understanding and appreciation for our delicate environment.

It blows my mind that gravity can basically work instantly over an infinite amount of space. That is all, carry on.
