i love metal, and i try to find new and interesting bands/genre all the time
but i was a late starter, and i feel sometimes i missed some of the basis for what metal is today
i recently got sad wings of destiny by priest, and spreading the disease from anthrax, to give me a taste of how it all got to where its now
and so im wondering, if you had to make a selection of must have metal
albums what would you include? not just the pioneers, but a metal time line or some such

im trying to broaden my horizons after realizing i had the same bands in my stereo and mp3 player for way too long (syl, dtb, opeth, amon amarth, zimmer's hole, fates warning, fear factory, isis, mastodon, gojira, iced earth..)

if youre trying to broaden your horizons, i'd recommend you to try bands such as dead can dance, cocteau twins, elend (though theyre not so old), joy division, fields of the nephilim.

i started listening to metal with bands such as satyricon, cradle of filth, old man's child, moonspell, so i didnt have much in the way of an introduction.

and most ppl start with metallica, slayer, maiden, and so, but since you mentioned the broadening of your horizons, well you might as well try.

Bathory, definitely...very important for Black and Viking Metal
Celtic Frost....very important for Black and Death Metal
King Crimson...would bands like Tool and Mastodon exist without them?
Napalm Death....grind pioneers
Emperor....even if you don't like Black Metal, check them out...there's hardly a BM band that has created better BM records. Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk and Prometheus are essential.

black metal has never been my cup of tea, though i guess i never gave it much of chance, i had a friend tried to introduce, but it failed, i couldnt get past the shrieking vocals, though musically it can be very interesting
she recommended some venom, most of all iirc
and acts like cradle of filth or dimmu borgir have definately not interested me

bathory : blood fire death
celtic frost : to mega therion
napalm death : harmony corruption
emperor : Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk

those would be the one's i'd pick based on reviews

I recommend ye Neurosis - Souls at Zero, they're a big influence for Isis and Mastodon. :O

Basics? AC/DC - Let There Be Rock. That's the most meat'n'potatoes album you can find. It has all the essentials that a good rock'n'roll album should have. Especially Phil Rudd's drumming is amazing in it's utter simplicity.

I would think that Goat would not appreciate Dani Filth blowing him...then again Dani might actually do a decent job...we will never know. Heh.

as for the 4 Albums you mentioned, shiram...yeah, go with those and see if you dig them in any way! And actually I used to be quite averse to BM myself but then I actually started to 'listen' to it and picked the good stuff!

if you dont love anthems, especially with strength i burn, then you should DIE!

Some time ago I was listening to nothing but metal and some better known "classic" metal albums I still like are Sepultura "Arise" and "Chaos A.D." (Chaos A.D. is less death/thrash metal than arise)
In Flames "Clayman" and Machine Head "Burn My Eyes".
And a may be not so well known influencial metal band is Psychotic Waltz.
Especially their album "A Social Grace". Their singer is now in Deadsoul Tribe.

Although I'm sure you've heard them, any metal thread cannot go without the might name of Meshuggah. If you haven't been exposed, you are missing out tremendously. EXTREMELY influential band.
