This is pretty cool. I've made a progressive station, a metal station, and a digital punk rock station so far :P

Some artists come out of leftfield, but over all it's probably a good way to tune you into new music based on your current tastes. You can sign up for free, I've not bothered with the subscription service.

They block (most) users from outside the USA. What is it exactly, I believe it's something like Last.fm?

OMG, I really thought this thread was about Pandora (click)

Thankfully not.

Because of that, I will bookmark Pandora and check it with speakers.

(unecessary post, but it was the other me who did it.)

That's odd. I can access it in the UK. If I knew anything about Proxy masking, I'd let you know.

"Dear Pandora Visitor,

We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for most listeners located outside of the U.S. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative.

We believe that you are in Netherlands (your IP address appears to be 131.155.something.something). If you believe we have made a mistake, we apologize and ask that you please contact us at somethnig@pandora.com"

My guess it's something to do with copyright- and royalty regulations being different all over the world.

It plays songs, you rate them and it will play similar songs.
Worked for me in the beginning, now its blocked.

You can put in an artist name (eg Devin Townsend), will play you a Devin Townsend track that it is licensed to play, you can give it a thumbs up or thumbs down if you like it not. Then it will attempt to find similar artists to Devin that you might like and plays songs by them, and again you rate them according to your tastes, and it gradually narrows down a profile of musi you might like.

I've found it's a good way of experiencing new bands, or bands I've heard of but haven't checked out so far.

I made a progressive channel starting with Devin Townsend, and have added bands like Isis, Neurosis, Opeth, Oceansize, Cult of Luna and so on.

I used to use (? ) Pandora before us Dutchies were blocked. Pretty handy little tool, but there weren't a lot of tracks available back then. If I typed in Devin Townsend, I would only have 10 to 12 tracks, which would keep repeating all the time. And I didn't like any of the tracks, except mr. Townsend his songs.
Last.FM does the same, so er, no need for Pandora, I guess.

Just one more question... what's digital punk rock? Sec Pistols meets Kraftwerk?

Stuff like pitchshifter, mad capsule markets, boom boom satellites, error. When punk driven music embraced things like breakbeat and drum'n'bass. It's not nu metal with DJs or anything, this is punk kids with computers.

Influences can range from Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys and Big Black to Squarepusher, DJ Shadow and Bomb The Bass.

I don´t know how last.fm works, but the point is that Pandora analyses every song musically (for example some song may contain extensive guitar soloing, hard rock roots, distorted vocals or something and pandora will find other songs with similar "sound"). It´s not a system like amazon uses, like "people who liked this also liked that", because it´s designed to offer you "unknown" music. It worked well for me before they restricted it.
