There may be many hockey fans out there, so...
I bought an xbox360 not long ago, with NHL08, I start to think I made a mistake.

I can't figure out how to score, d'you have to drive the puck with that annoying joystick, prepare your slap, taking a look at the goal to see where to shoot, then point the stick in a totally different direction than the one you're going to - which is completely awkward - all that in a time frame of about 0.05 second ?

I have a custom team, all guys are at 99, I have 40 shots to 18, 40 bodychecks to 5 (ok maybe 3 were effective as it seems the guys are not subject to gravity anymore, except on rare occasion where you've been preparing your hit 40 meters ahead, the rest of the time the defenseman are just doing circles trying to catch the opoonent), 21 face-offs won to 1, 12 minutes in the offense zone Vs 6 for the computer, and still I lose 2 to nothing.

When I eventually score, 9 times out of 10 it's not one of the 40 slaps that finally makes it, no, it's just a lame deviation in a totally awkward direction.

Is there something I'm missing ? I read many reviews saying the 08 was finally more than a mere roasters revamp, but still, I need more than a code to enable reebok jerseys to say that this game doesn't suck.

I have that xbox since 10 days, and I'm already thinking of selling it, as all studio come up with are boring FPS (I find video games those days are like movies, big names, sequels of sequels of sequels, lot of explosion, but no mood, no atmosphere, no personality). The pad sucks too, the directional cross isn't precise at all, you hit "right" and it moves "right/up"...

We've been great fans of older Xbox's NHLs, but this
sucks.
Now we cannot compete anymore who's the best,
since even the best players can't do any goals.

I announce the game non-playable.

(..and return to my Halo 3 )

um

if its anything like NHL 06 it should be quite easy. there are certain moves that beat the goalie every single time. soon as you figure them out, you'll be winning games 15-1

Yeah but the point of NHL 08 (and I think the whole EA Sports 08 range? FIFA 08 as well for sure) is that it isn't as predicable anymore, that's why he can't manage to score.

I've played FIFA 08 a bit and I had some trouble scoring as well. But eventually I'd score one or two each match anyway :)

but, when NHL 06 came out there were people complaining about how good the goalies were.

"they're world beaters"
"it's too hard to score"
etc etc.

i cant imagine they've made it much harder. those games dont tend to change too much with new installments every year.

Well, in NHL 07 pretty much all shots go in. The most sure-fire way is to skate along the rink corner and cut towards the blueline from the nearest corner of the net with your spoon side toward the goalie. When you pass the net line, start the shot and it will go in 80 % of the time.

Yeah that's how it worked when I started with the NHL serie back in 97.
I was struggling to score and started a season in easy mode I think, the first games of the season were tough to win, then 20 games later I always won like 15-0, except on a few rare occurrences where NOTHING at all would come in the net.

Whatever they say I guess there's something similar even in the 2008 version, but I don't have the patience to play games where I lose 4 to 1 when I have 40 shots to 10 and an overall domination of the game.

Also I find the game not as fast as it used to be. Maybe the NHL is less violent, which is great as it was obviously going to far sometimes, but the game really lacks intensity. Simulation is one thing, fun is another, just like the superbike game where you fall off the bike if you turn like 1° to much...

It's kind of a common problem these days for people who don't like FPS. It's about the only thing that's available in heaps. I myself am quite limited due to some added motion sickness while playing those too. Otherwise I also prefer games that actually have some "feel. Something extra. Alan Wake might be something to look forward to on 360. It's some kind of psychological horror game made by Finnish developers (those behind Max Payne I think). They're aiming for some Twin Peaks vibe in the game.

It's interesting that you don't seem to like the pad though. Most seemed to really praise their new controller.

And about the NHL game. No idea about the last one since I haven't played it yet. It seems as if it followed a similar pattern as their Fifa-series though. Those ones went from being very easy (once you find some set method) to being very hard to control from what I've seen in more recent games.
