If this is the first you read of a new NIN album in 2008, you'll be surprised to know its already been released. I'll just copy and paste from theninhotline.net :P

Nine Inch Nails has self-released a new instrumental album, Ghosts I-IV. Consisting of 36 instrumental tracks described as "music for daydreams" and released under Creative Commons, it is available in a wide range of formats: MP3, double CD, a package with: the 2xCD, multitracks on DVD, and a deluxe book, and finally the super-deluxe limited edition which includes all that as well as a copy of the album on vinyl.
The free MP3 download includes the first volume - nine tracks (each with unique artwork), wallpapers, and a PDF of the 40 page book. Available directly off nin.com, you also have the option to torrent it via official NIN profiles on Waffles, what.cd and The Pirate Bay. Absent from this release was any kind of leak of audio or information. Record labels and artists should take notes: This is how you do music distribution.

MARCH 5TH 2008: All copies of the $300 deluxe limited edition are sold out. It was limited to 2500 copies. 300 X 2500 = 750,000. $750,000 alone made from an album thats only downloadable for $5 and cheaper for $10.

This is awesome. Much respect to Trent for doing something like this.

Trent Reznor's awesome level went up by a factor of about 50 yesterday in my eyes.

Pretty cool stuff so far, just listening to Ghosts I. Some of it reminds me a bit of The Fragile, but more cohesive and less of a downer (!!!). :P

I don't really like NIN, but that's probably the coolest way to release an album, ever.

Good. I'm glad.

If anyone remembers Reznor's rant about record companies the last time he toured Oz, you'll know he had promised to do exactly this.

Fuck 'em. :amen:

Listening now...

Ghosts IV (31) is really cool.

This all kinda reminds me of the Quake soundtrack a bit (With more going on and more structure). I'm definitely getting the deluxe 2 CD/1DVD/1Blu-ray $75 edition some day.

This is probably the best non-traditional NIN album since Still. Infact, I think it stole Still's place in order of albums I love by NIN.

Yeah, I think the instrumentals on the Fragile is what defined it, really. Now that this is a whole album of instrumentals, its much more abstract and interesting than the Fragile where your given one instrumental, and then some song which may not of been Trent's best. (I don't really like the right/second disc of Fragile that much. Always preferred the Left disc usually)

If you like this, I would probably recommend The Fragile, or the Downward Spiral. Downward Spiral is a lot darker, and more industrial. You may also want to give With Teeth a listen. Its the most poppiest NIN album and its where Trent applied the new style of NIN.

With Teeth was a misstep in my eyes. If you want "new NIN" go for the one last year, Year Zero. it doesn't suck like it's predecessor does.
Aside from that, what Jayjay said. Then go for Pretty Hate Machine just because it kicks ass.

With Teeth is a great album. it has stacks of great songs on it, right where it belongs is one of his best and the acoustic way he plays it live is even better

I'd say my favorites are Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral.
