Forgive me Devin, for I have sinned...

I downloaded every Devin album I haven't got already. You see, I've been wanting to listening to something new fro Devin for a long time, but his records are fucking impossible to find, I have no money, ordering online is a pain in the ass because my parents thing there are internet gremlins that steal your credit card and rape your bank account, and I can't earn money at the moment being that I owe my parents about $400 dollars. I haven't gotten a new Devin album (counting Strapping) since Christmas, and I've really, really wanted to here something new. So yeah, I downloaded the following albums:

Ocean Machine
Physicist
Terria
Accelerated Evolution
City

I'm going to pay for them as soon as I can. You see, I'm starting a job next week, and that should get rid of the debt I owe to my parents. Then my first goal will be to buy all of the albums I downloaded. So, what are you guy's thoughts on what I did?

I'm torn on this one - obviously pirating music isn't cool, but you're going to pay for it later. So you can look at it like a payment plan kinda thing (buy now and pay nothing for six months with 0% interest woo!), but at the end of the day it's still theft of music. So I reckon it's bad until you redeem yourself by buying the albums.

If that makes sense.

I really can't make up my mind on it.

Get a debit card and make a new account just for it. Then transfer money from your real account to the debit card account only when you're placing an order. That way even if the gremlins sprout up, you'll only lose the sum of your latest purchase ;)

Just get yourself a Paypal account and don't tell your parents about it :P

I don't really blame you, I downloaded Dev's music before I bought it as well. In fact, I used to download a lot, and I still do.
But to be honest, if it wasn't for downloading music, I wouldn't have broadened my interest anywhere beyond Metallica and I wouldn't have known about 'good' music at all :P

Also, I've heard (not sure it's true though) that the revenue of record sales goes mostly to the record companies, and that bands make most of their money from touring so from a financial point of view I don't care too much either. Besides, it seems to me that most artists are more interested in bringing their music to as many people as possible, than making as much music as possible.

You're a saint compared to me. I have all his albums and I've only bought The Hummer and Ziltoid.

This is very true. I know the guys from the band Threat Signal personally. Toured with them for a few days, they hung at my house and jammed on my guitars and such, and during this time I asked them about the how all this works and how they get paid and they said for sure they make much more off of tours and merchandise than they do off of record sales. They really dont get anything from record sales until they make enough to pay off what the record company gives them to record their album with anyways.

Just pay your parents back in installments. 50 bucks here, 75 there, leaving you spare money to fulfill your CD dreams straight away!

I downloaded everything at first.. Because I had no money. But then I got money and bought the lot. So.. just buy it eventually and all will be well. Or we'll come beat on you. With large sticks. Promise.

I am gonna quote that only because I LOVE that very self-explaining picture how it works! :D :D

(But let's still buy records, so they would make them. They look far better than self-made covers )
