Talk about whatever you want to here, but stay correct

Anyone knows Orson Scott Card? He's a writer. Of good ones, writing science fiction stories with deeper meaning, which I've always respected as they are well written and appear to be vessels of logical, sober and wise thoughts (well, at least those I've read). Among other novels, he's an author of Ender's saga and series of books about Alvin the Maker, both of them are affirmations of humanity, understanding of other cultures, condemnation of mindless destruction and feature lots of otherwise good and noble things (call me pompous, but it's really lot of nice stuff in there). Author is also a Mormon, which was always kinda odd for me, as I've never felt it reading - but books seem religously neutral, so I hadn't any problems with it.

Anyway, recenly, this guy caused a bit of havoc on digg.com and other places publishing this little bit of writing:

And, suprise surprise, with all the wise things about other cultures he wrote, he appear to be passionate adversary of gay marriages. Of course large part of this text refer to legal aspects of whole things, which is perfectly understandable, but there's also a lot of writing about gay marriages being "unnatural" in opposition to hetero ones (where are all the married squirrels if it's the thing of nature?), ritual of marriage being always with humanity (well I guess it has to be invented somewhere back in time, probably there still are some cultures without institution of marriage) and homo relationships being mortally dangerous to the civilisation (how in the hell, there were always small percentage of homosexual specimens - probably among many species - and somehow I've never heard about mass extinctions because of GAY). Also, he raises problem of same sex couples didn't breed - which is another point I don't get, since homosexual folks without any relationships doesn't breed anyway - here comes obvious point that, um, people should be forced to breed? Maybe I misunderstood.

To cut it short - it's rather weird that dude that did awesome book about comprehending culture doing things _much_ more unexplicable than good ol' same-sex buggery (I'm talking about "Speaker For The Dead" here), now does manifest about army of homos ruining civilization, people CHOOSING homosexuality etc. Sure not everyone can be comfortable with such revolutionary concept as openly gay people, but you can at least try to use more logical arguments damnit.

So, does mind of medieval bible basher win with modern writer from the age of reason? Does gay people are really menacing? Am I liberal leftwing cnut that doesn't know a cat shit about life? Should I know about some fresh scientific data about gayness being aquired/contagious? Discuss (or at least try to read my useless rant).

(Title of the post is reference to everyone's favourite real life trolls - Westboro Baptist Church.)

Jesus, I don't understand that.

Using human biology in a religious argument = failure

Troubling indeed, although this:

...kind of thing bugs me almost as much, call it a pet peeve or something. I suppose generalizations come with a definition like homosexual, but I find many people's reactions of "Oh, gays, those people that fuck eachother in the ass right?" to be just... so god-damned annoying. :( That's kind of like saying "Musicians? Aren't they those folks that play guitar really fast and growl into a mic?" ...Does that make sense at all? Cause it's the best analogy I could come up with. :P

Yes, yes, I know that was just an offhand remark by Dunkelheit and all that, but I figured I'd grab the opportunity and take a moment to bitch about something vaguely related.

good fellow, every comment i make in this, our lovely forum, is an offhand remark, i think the sentence with huge pink fonts made that clear ;), but it all boils down to that, intolerant pricks who hate for the sheer hell of it.

next time ill try to be more politically correct that i may not annoy people's sensibilities, but i doubt it :)

ps, moreover, the guy i mentioned, the one who was gay, i used to talk to him in those very same terms, he never got upset or anything, because his sexual orientation (or anybody's) is not a goddamn issue for me.

Haha, sorry if I came off as too serious-- like I said, I know you weren't serious to begin with, I just sometimes go spouting my opinions as if I had been offended when really all I had been was reminded of something I wanted to say at some point in time and only just got around to spouting it absent-mindedly in the wrong context. I do that :D

I should get used to writers being often rather odd. Robert Henlein had rather authoritarian views at the beginning, then got converted to hippie-nudist (yup), P.K. Dick was just batshit insane and liked to send letters to FBI about Stanislaw Lem being not a real writer, but a LEM, secret communist organization. Stanislaw Lem was even crazier, because he insisted he is a real person himself (I know he didn't die, he just came back home). Though Card takes the cake, because in above mentioned writers' books you could find some hints of their idiosyncracies - Card's stuff is perfect fodder for young, modern atheists :).

Ok, I feel like a pretentious twunt now. Wait a sec, I'll paste some outraging joke to sick jokes thread to redeem myself.
