I reckon the fuzz is coming from around the 4k mark. Whenever I layer guitars and end up with a fuzzy sound it is the highs, not the mids. I read in an Aussie audio mag that 4k is where that direct in digital distortion sound sits and they were right, although it may not be in your case. But give it a try with different q settings
