Weren't kidding regarding update on Motion- I didn't realise it was gonna have so much of a rewrite vocally.

The mix is killer though dude, still waiting in anticipation for this.

I thought some of the original vocals just didn't fit that well...I like my voice better for most of those parts, now that I can sing them lol. I understand if people got attached to the old version, but hey, those were only demos anyway. I didn't realize I could pull off the vocals back then.

Regardless, I hope people still stick by us. :D

Motion with *gasp* a real drummer! ...And a different bassist than I. Snare is fucking huge...reminds me of AE.

Anyone wants a version to download just lemme know. I have it on Mediafire. Just don't pout when the album version still has Steven Slate drumming for me.

Personally I thought the live drummer isn't quite on the ball performance wise for the track.

Production's still cool though dude - what snare and mics were you using on that?

Is this still being edited, or are you leaving the performance as it is?

Also, are you planning on having more live drums on other tracks? (might be difficult for things like Furor to get it right)

Yeah we didn't have much time to really get things totally solid. I could've spent hours quantizing and all that...and I actually tried it, but it just really sounded too choppy and took away from some of the energy and natural feel. The motive here wasn't really performance anyway. It was more to demonstrate that I am capable of micing instruments and mixing them, because the college I am applying to demands it. I needed two stereo recordings of contrasting musical styles with at least three different musicians, so this was one of them.

Snare is a mix of a few things. One signal is heavily compressed with Waves SSL channel strip and lots of low end. Partly a Chris Lord-Alge preset, tweaked a bit. The next is a really wet, more "paper'y" sounding signal...kind of like what a Slate sample sounds like dry, with heavy emphasis on the stick attack. I forget offhand what frequency that is. Anyway, I blended those two, and ran them through a parallel compression buss and a reverb buss. The reverb used was Waves Rverb "next door drummer". Also, I used a lot of room mic on this...which was just my SM7b in the middle of the room with a channel delay for width. So, there it is.

Awesome dude, I know a lot of guys that use the Waves stuff and had nothing but good things to say about them.

Unfortunately, my G5 can't really handle it and all my other stuff at the same time so I'm gonna have to upgrade at some point in the future.

How come you used the SM7 as a room mic? Was that a specific stylistic choice or was it just lying around and you figured you'd give it a shot? (I've done that a couple of times with my NTK, and worked well most of the time)

It just seems an odd choice to me. I've always wanted to try it as a Snare top mic though, but I'm not sure I'd wanna risk sticking it in the way of most drummers I record.

I should really get in the habit of posting more of my stuff somewhere lol
