it is important to know that Ryan is the master of RT's. But yeah, I guess the quickest way to find out about it is on the RVP board

I think Devin should stop playing guitar on tour and concentrate on singing. I think it would benefit his vocal performance. There are tons of great guitar players out there, but no one else can sing like Dev...

Maybe, but he has to be the writer of the guitar parts.

Yes, absolutely. And I can understand why he would want to play the song he wrote. But every time I see him perform with Strapping, it just looks so damn tiring for him...

I love watching him struggle, does that sound wrong? Maybe a guitarist for touring could work, but creation wise, it couldn't be any other way. Personally

I know the shit I'm recording will take me a LONG time to be able to sing and play it smooth, but I don't care! I can do it!

Anyway back onto Dev: no one else has his voice, or his guitar style i.m.o, I even love it when his voice suffers, cause its live! rough and hard, just the way I like it. If I want perfect quality I'll put on the cd..

Playing guitar while singing looks cooler than just singing, IMO :).

Did Vai write his own solo or did he just improvise over the guide melodies written by Devin?

I think Vai's a good player, but his songwriting is way too over the top for me. I always felt he is trying to be experimental for the sake of it.

It was a little of both from what I know. Dev gave Vai the song and told him where to go nuts and he did just that ! The song part Vai played on was written by Dev but Steve was allowed to write any guitar solo he wanted over top. Hope that answers your question.....

By the way, like I've already mentioned in my Journal post....Vai layed down one fucked up solo ! It's crazy and very cool. It definitely brings that song to a new level when he starts going off IMO. You can be the judge of it yourself when the album comes out. It'll be cool to hear what everyone has to say about Vai's solo and the whole album in general....can't wait !

Hey Ryan,

After the Lalu disc came out, you said it was the best thing you'd ever recorded as a professional drummer.

Now that the new DTB disc is done, has your opinion changed or do you still feel your work on Lalu remains untouched?

Cheers!

That is a very good question bro....here's a long answer for ya'

There are so many things on the new DTB that I'm proud of. I'm probably most happy with the DTB album for the drum parts I came up with for the songs......play for the songs !!!! The drumparts on this album fit the music so well and I'm very "musical" with my cymbals on this album. Lot's of splash, bell and china work on Synchestra. The beats are way more creative and progressive than AE and I would say that this is one of the most consistent progressive albums, overall, that Dev has done in his solo career IMO.

I get to be myself on the new DTB....although the drumming is'nt as consistently progressive as the Lalu album. There are some very progressive parts on the new DTB but not consistently throughout. I'm very proud of Synchestra but I don't think it is my best work "technically" to date. I do consider Synchestra one of my overall faves for how the drumming turned out and how it fits the music so well, using my drumstyle !

I still think that Lalu showcases my overall drumming style the best to date since my God Awakens Petrified days. Non-Human Level was easily the hardest, technical album I've ever done. Double Bass Thrash Madness....it was a very demanding album to record ! The thing with NHL is that I pretty much play the same style of drumming thru the whole album, so it only really showcases one or two styles of my playing. The Lalu album I do crazy Time Signatures, Jazzy stuff, Thrashy stuff, Blast beats, Groove stuff, Lots of Ghost Strokes and the list goes on.....

So I would still claim the Lalu album to show my versatility and technical aspects the best. In short, I do a little of everything consistently throughout the whole Lalu album.

Hope that answers your question....it's certainly a long enough answer

RVP

PS... On a side note I will definitely say that the Synchestra recording was BY FAR the most enjoyable recording experience I've EVER had ! This album will easily be one of my top fave albums of all time. I love every song on this record...it's amazing !!!! 8)
