Since we (or well you guys, I wasn't here at the time) spent time discussing and ultimately pieced together the original version of Infinity, I was wondering if it's not too early to discuss the original single-album standalone version of Ki. We were discussing this in the Deconstruction spoiler thread but I figured it'd be worth making a new thread for.

Thanks to LeperMessiah1170 for helping dig this post up from 2008:

The Dev wrote:Ok...update. :|

There's two albums. One is an EP.

The first album is called 'Ki' and has 14 songs.

A Monday
Coast
Disruptr
Gato Negro
(Purge)tory
Stand
Waveform
Heavens End
Dinosaurs!
Lady Helen
Ki
Addicted
Quiet Riot
Demon League

It's not a band thing. It's the 'me' show, starring...me. I had talked to both Gene and Ryan about the drums, but decided in the end to go with someone totally different, style wise as well as scene wise. The dude's name is Duris Maxwell.

Ki has a bit of everything... a real purge. Complete 72 minute disk.

The EP has been written at the same time and is just an absolute chaotic bizzare alien headfuck called 'Deconstruction Of A Cheeseburger' and is primarily electronic and guitar / Orchestra orieneted. (no drummer, not DFH tho...) I'm trying to get a grant to use a real orchestra and choir. It's fucked and awesome. Based on Karl Jungs collective unconcious and how anything (a cheeseburger?) can be traced back to the source. It will probably be released on the web. We're about to start working on a new site.

Been designing amps and guitars with dudes. I'll let the cat out of the bag soon. Some cool stuff is on the horizon.

No more producing for a while :tongue:

Filming the whole process for a bonus disk, (editing myself with Final Cut express...ugly bastard) ...taught by the Meatball.

Getting PT8 next week.

I'll get you more info soon.'

As you can see, the original tracklist has stuff that later ended up on Deconstruction and Addicted. I figure it'd be fun to try and discuss what could've and might've been. Perhaps when the box set comes out and we have Dinosaurs (and hopefully other things) we can try and piece together what the original Ki might've sounded like. That is if we can figure out what/where (Purge)tory and Waveform ended up.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest the (Purge)tory ended up being Terminal because of where (Purge)tory is on the original tracklist and where Terminal is on the actual album.

Nah, Dev and Dave Young ended up writing that one together later on.

EDIT: I suppose it's possible, but from what I remember that was a later addition.

Just noticed the subtle change from "Heavens End" to "Heaven Send".

At what point did the more minimalist "Ki" sound come to light? I'm wondering if some of these songs were originally envisioned as being less toned-down, like the live version of Disruptr that was played during the Addicted tour that's mostly distorted guitar.

I believe Devin has mentioned that he originally tried to write/record a lot of the stuff from Ki with the typical "wall of sound" aesthetic, and realized later that he didn't like how it sounded and went with a much different approach.

It's really awesome to see how the ideas took shape for the DTP albums. I'm curious as to what kind of stuff we'd have ended up hearing if there really was no drummer on Decon. I'm assuming he was thinking of using orchestral percussion? That would've been really strange.

This is awesome, I remember when this was happening.
Has anyone else been putting these into a playlist and seeing how it might have sounded?

Ah it's really awesome seen these old track lists. So much conspiracy! Hope it's not annoying, as an artist, to have your fans dismantle all your announcements bit by bit, even the ones from 3 years ago :P

Wow, I really like how it turned out to be!
I mean, I probably would've enjoyed this version of Ki as well, but I like how it evolved to something much much bigger.

I once made a list of all songs Devin mentioned and the evolution of tracklists. These are the songs that once were mentioned, but never appeared on an actual record:

Synchronicity Freaks --> Ki bonus track, released
(Purge)tory --> ???
Waveform --> Deconstruction's lyrics (song) mention waveforms. Back in 2008, Deconstruction and the Cheesburger stuff were already talked about.
Dinosaurs! --> ???
Godflesh --> ???
Only Human --> Awake! maybe? Fro mthe lyrics: "Thats alright, you're only human boy"
Pornogra-free --> I presume it's Ain't Never Gonna Win, based on the tracklist.
Nibz --> Supercrush!
Juno --> ???
Timmy --> ???

I only included Devin's updates up to june 2009, so Deconstruction and Ghost stuff is not included.

These are the tracklists I saved, with album name and date of publication.

I'm pretty sure we will hear those demos on one of the bonus discs of the box-set

As everyone else has said, waveform prob became part of decon, I think that was probably the chorus bit to the demo, assuming it was actually written and not just an idea, I wonder if there was more to it and it got split up and put into different songs, guess it would be impossible to tell haha

Oh and I know this is another dumb idea, but the way the drums sound and that bit of clean guitar at the beginning of praise the lowered make me want to say it could have been (Purge)tory in the original envisioning, especially since it's followed by stand. but thats just my 2 cents

ain't never gonna win was a jam during the recording sessions, so that's not anything. We can safely assume Ain't Never Gonna Win and Terminal were not from the earliest of times.
