No doubt.

Absolutely incredible night, my favorite gig ever. I could die happy after that.

One really awesome moment was where Dev bend down right in front of us (My brother and I were right near the center in front, just a bit to the right) and was gazing at this girl. (She was originally on my left but things got bouncy during Bad Devil and she shifted to the stage while I ended up behind her) He then turned to my brother with that same expression but then Devin realized who he was looking at and they both looked shocked.

Thanks again man for helping me out with buying my brother that Ziltoid hoodie. I remember you asked me if I was short cash but I thought you said what size... dude, I was like half deaf. XD

I got photos and vids that I'll post up in a little while.

Devy will fucking own 2011.

Hey, I've been there before, and it all goes to Dev anyway, right? Not a problem.

Haha yeah! That was awesome. I was able to keep my spot directly next to the pole on stage right.. and consequently had Devin thrust and grind against said pole.. so yeah, right in my face hahaha. Amazing show though. Happy I hung around afterwards to catch 'em loading back up into the U-Haul, got to chat with all the guys (Bass Frehley, RVP, Dave & Dev).. wish more people had stuck around afterwards though! It was only myself and my buddy Mike there.

Dev says Decon is just going to be a single record because a double record would "give you a headache" (according to him). They're touring the west coast dates in a Ford van, then flying out east and getting a proper bus. Dev said they're certainly losing money on this tour.. so please do all that you can to support our boys! Buy stuff! Buy a joke (don't forget the high-five)! Our boys are working hard and can use all the help they can get.

Ryan said there was 400 some people there last night, which is amazing for a Tuesday night (for any band). I can only see the crowds getting bigger for 'em (well, maybe except for San Diego.. err I mean.. Ramona, CA

I've several more vids from up front that I need to chop apart and post, so keep your eyes peeled.. Glad to hear you had a great time & can't wait to see Dev & Co. back out this way again!

Too much WIN. Some day, Dev deserves to have a full costume ala the alien leader from Mars Attacks.

Dave 'Fucking' Young...he's learned to live with it. :D

Also snagged a setlist. (Brutal ripping of upper corner)

Woah, how did I not know about the existence of these forums??? I'm gonna copy paste my review of this show from my blog...so if it sounds a little out of context...it is.

On to the matter at hand. I saw fucking Devin Townsend for the first time last night. Yes, it was awesome. No, life will never be the same. Yes, I bought a shirt.

Lets start this story from the beginning. Since I am the only person I know personally who listens to Hevy Devy, and I HATE going to concerts alone, I decided to drag my best-friend Josh to the concert. Now, keep in mind this isn’t normally the kind of music he listens to. His favorite band is Paramore, and his musical tastes don’t stray too far from that archetype. However, I’ve brought him to three concerts before, and he ended up enjoying them all (they were good shows too, Iron Maiden, then Faith No More, then Dream Theater opening for Iron Maiden).

Still, I knew that this concert would be unlike anything he (or I) had experienced before.

So, we bought our tickets. Fast forward to October 12th at about 7:20 pm. We arrived at Slim’s, and stood in line waiting to get in. I had been playing “Ocean Machine: Biomech” on the way up to San Francisco, but Josh still didn’t feel prepared…but who could blame him? He was a stranger in a foreign land. Anyway, we got inside (after being asked if we were 21, which scared the shit out of us for about half a second…turns out there is no re-entry for anyone under 21).

As we stepped into the club, we noticed that even though we were pretty far back in line, just about everyone was buying beer, and there was a lot of room at the right side of the stage (house right, stage left). I dragged Josh over, but I stopped to get a shirt. As I type this, I am proudly wearing my new Devin Townsend Project t-shirt (with three crayons at different stages in their life). That was quick, and we still had time to get right next to the stage. We met a nice guy (who’s name I never got) who was obviously very excited to see Dev. We discussed a couple of things. I won’t bore you with the details, but it was incredibly geeky ( Him: “Have you seen his Peavey 7-string?” Me: “Hell yeah! Its SoOoOoOoO COOL!”).

I could tell Josh was scarred from our trip to see Faith No More in April. Even though we were seated in the balconies, I had warned him that Mike Patton does crazy shit, which sometimes involves fucking with the crowd. This time, we were up against the stage, and Josh was worried.

“Does he like…spit on the crowd or anything?”

“I dunno, hopefully!”

So, we hung out for a couple of minutes until TesseracT (the opening act) started their set. I don’t ever expect much from opening acts, but I really liked this band (I ended up buying their EP from them at the end of the night). I didn’t know any of the songs, but that didn’t stop me from getting into it. The band was very heavy, with a LOT of time signature and tempo changes. Which I loved. Very interesting to listen to. The changes sounded almost frantic. It reminded me a lot of Dream Theater’s early work, mixed with some Nu-Metal heaviness…it was great. Seriously, check out this band: http://www.tesseractband.co.uk/

TesseracT finished their set, and they had succeeded in winning the crowd over. Now for the wait. We were already thirsty, but we didn’t want to give up our spots, so we stayed put.

After maybe 20 minutes, the curtain came up, and the band started coming out. It was almost surreal. Devin (who is the epitome of humbleness) came out smiling and waving at the crowd, and we just lost our shit. None of the standard (and overdone) rockstar shit like “HOW THE FUCK ARE WE DOING SAN FRANCISCO? YEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” They got right into it with “Addicted!” which was awesome.

“Its a Rock N’ Roll party!” Dev yelled, “I don’t wanna see any sulking!”

Okay Dev, but just ’cause its you.

For that first song, I kept looking over at Josh, who seemed skeptical at first. After the next song (Supercrush!) Dev took the opportunity to let the crowd know that he had just farted all over them, and that the fart had ripped out of him like an XR57. At least I think that’s what he said. I don’t know anything about motorcycles…but Josh does, and that statement won him over. Realizing that Devin was a colossal dork was enough to get a smile on his face, which was good for me. I no longer felt the need to check up on him.

Now, I’m not going to go through how awesome each song was, because they were all awesome. What I’m gonna do is write out the setlist, and I’ll tell you which songs made me flip my shit (hint, it was all of them).

Addicted!
Supercrush!
Kingdom
Deadhead
Truth
Om
By Your Command
Life
Pixillate
Bad Devil (this right here was the party song, and I totally wasn’t expecting it. Fucking awesome)

ENCORE/Piss Break

Color Your World/The Greys
Deep Peace

I think that setlist is accurate. Its from memory, so I don’t know if its 100% right. I know the songs are right, but the order might be off.

I’m just gonna rave about the band for a second here. Dev couldn’t have picked a better group of musicians. Every one of them looked like they were having a great time, and they sounded amazing. Which brings me to the sound, which was way better than I expected for a club like Slim’s. Turns out their sound system is great! Everything was very clear…but that might just be because my ear was up against one of the monitors.

One more thing to note about the show itself. This guy who was standing next to Josh was sulking for the entire concert, which made his reaction to “Color Your World” even more awesome. I can’t really do this justice with words, but I’m going to try. His face didn’t look overly happy, just a slight smile. It was his dance that was incredible though…

His hands were in his pockets. His waist was swiveling around like he was doing a very extreme version of the Macarena, but his knees were bouncing like an Old Timey cartoon character. You know what I mean, right? Watch a very old Mickey Mouse cartoon. Everyone bobs up and down in time with the music…anyway, his knees did that, and his waist was going crazy…like a pelvic thrust in every direction.

Josh died. It was too much for him.

Well, all good things must come to an end, so the band left the stage. Josh and I finally got a drink of water, I went over to buy TesseracT’s CD, and I chatted with them for a second (really nice guys by the way), and just hung out for a couple of minutes. I had messaged back and forth with Dev a couple of weeks prior, and asked if I could get him to sign my CD at the show. He said yes, and said he’d be hanging out, so we were just kind of waiting around.

Alas, it was not meant to be. The club closed very soon after the show ended, and Dev was nowhere to be seen. Josh and I went outside to wait for our ride home…which was fun. San Francisco at midnight…what could go wrong?

Anyway, we sat outside and watched TesseracT load up their shit, we talked to a few homeless guys, and we just waited around. At about 11:50 pm, we saw Dev start loading up his gear with the rest of the band. I started to walk over to say hi and gush for a few minutes, but then I changed my mind. They looked really busy, and I didn’t want to bother them. At about midnight our ride got there, and we walked past Dev. I was subconsciously hoping that Dev would strike up a conversation. In my head it went like this:

Dev: “Hey! You’re that guy I talked to on Twitter!”

Me: “Yeah! How’s it going?”

Dev: “Awesome! How did you like the show?”

Me: “Best show I’ve ever seen! Thanks for coming to SF!”

Dev: “No problem man, do you want to work for me? We have room in the van if you want to come on tour with us. I need a guitar tech. Let me pay you enough so that you don’t have to worry about working ever again! Let’s be best friends!”

Me: “Sounds good to me!”

And they all lived happily ever after.

Unfortunately, my completely logical and possible fantasy was not meant to be. We walked past Dev unnoticed (which is saying something, because my long curly hair and fat-ass combo acts as a sort of eyeball magnet). I considered striking up a conversation once again, but I really didn’t want to bother him.

Overall, it was an awesome night. I can’t wait for Dev to be back in my area…I will definitely go to that show.

More Later,

-Sean
