I was at this gig! It was a great show, albeit one with a slow start. Everything seemed to be setting up well, until it came to getting the clicktrack and vocal track in Dev/RVP's headphones. They went through various stages of working/not working. For most artists, this would be a disaster. But Dev just stood up there, playing it cool and cracking wise, it was more entertaining than any of the other bands there, really.

Eventually, Dev said "fuck it, let's just go," and launched into a heavy version of Disruptr. Sounded amazing, very different from the album version. They went through the set, sounding tight as ever. Dev's vocals on this version of Kingdom are unreal; a really high falsetto style (compared to the yelling on Physicist). Very awesome.

Anyway, after the band finished up the set, I stayed for Cynic (who also put on a great show, even though the frontman is a bit... odd), but when it was time for BTBAM, I skipped out to check out the merch stand. That's where I encountered RVP; he was hanging around chattin' some fans up. I started talking to him, got a poster signed, and he told us that if we want to see Dev to head to the tour buses; so a few fellow Dev fans and myself did just that. We all just hung around outside waiting, encountering RVP twice more, when Dev comes along. We say 'Hey!' and start talking about random subjects (sincerity in music, producing, the technical problems, I asked about the Wildhearts, etc). It was very cool. He signed a bunch of stuff for us, took pictures with us, and just hung out. It was good times, he stayed for a good 45 minutes or so.

Overall, amazing show. The band sounded great, Dev's voice was sounding better than ever, and I got to meet the man himself.

I have never particularly cared for using emotes, but for those unfortunate, illiterate souls that may stumble upon this forum, well this is a review for them. As for a review of the show, there is not much more that I can add to the review above me. Still, I will go ahead and respond to this post with how the show left me feeling.

After describing this concert to a roommate of mine he inquired "If you had to choose, was this show (DTP) better than the Os Mutantes show"? It took me by surprise a little because both were obviously fantastic, but in the end I replied with "Devin Townsend". The answer rose an eyebrow on my roommate, but I feel that it was correct; Devin tore it up in Houston. The musicianship like a towering beast shattered all of the anxiety, restlessness and discontent - though Dev is a class act in comedy - created by the technical difficulties. My favorite moment was the extended solo/bridge in "By Your Command". Look at the videos above for further details.

After 3 years off the road, this mere 30 minute set proved the Devin Townsend Project - or whatever incarnation they are in the years to come - is not done and deserves an audience ... and a better slot!
