Great show. Sound was kinda muddy during Devin's set but that could be because I was standing off to the side. Got some pretty good video of the crowd dancing on stage during Bad Devil. I'll post it to youtube and then link it here. Saw a bunch of people taking photos, so hopefully those get posted.

Heres one photo I took:

Heres the setlist from last night: (NOTE* I copied this from a website, I remember them playing "Life" but I don't know where it was in the setlist.) Feel free to correct it.

the opening bands were...interesting. the first band had some unpronounceable name. the singer looked, sounded, and acted almost EXACTLY like Mike Patton. the band sounded like a cross between Faith no More and early Mr. Bungle, but with a hardcore element. It was pretty entertaining, as they were pretty goofy and were clearly having a ton of fun onstage, but it was almost unsettling because it was like they were trying to sound as much like a Mike Patton project as possible. I can't stress enough how similar the singer sounded to Patton. He even used the same vocal effects (megaphone, etc). Part of me wanted to tell them to start doing their own thing instead of basically being a Mike Patton tribute band, but on the other hand, they did a pretty damn good job of it.

the second band was Pitch Black Forecast, which I'd never heard of but somehow featured the ex-vocalist from Mushroomhead and GENE HOGLAN on drums, were a pretty good groove/thrash type of band. The guitarist from the first band played in this one, too, and the first band's singer played bass. It was pretty strange to hear this kind of metal at a Devin Townsend show...it seemed really out of place, especially when some drunk, shirtless dumbass kept trying to mosh with everyone even though only like 5 people wanted to.

Tesseract were awesome. Nuff said.

Devin was glorious. Very funny, very vulgar, very honest, spot-on in his playing and singing. He's so animated onstage, which is amplified by the fact that the rest of the band, good as they are, just kind of stand there and play. Deadhead, in particular, was delicious. He had a bunch of audience members come up onstage during Bad Devil to dance and sing along. I and like four other people were screaming the lyrics into the microphone with Devin onstage, which was an absolute blast. The sound was a bit treble-heavy at first, and the samples and drums overpowered the guitar for most of the set, but i put in earplugs and it sounded pretty good.

After the encore, Devin stuck around at the edge of the stage to meet people and sign autographs. We didn't have too much time to spend, but my friends I got to meet him briefly. He seems like a real class act. I also bumped into the rest of the band as they were walking through the venue after the show, and got to shake hands with them.

I bought a CD from Tesseract, who ran their own merch booth like badasses. These guys are easily the best of all those "djent" bands from the internet, if you ask me. A lot of the atmospheres they played around with reminded me of the new Cynic.

Overall, it was a great show. I took some pictures, which I'll post ASAP.

Is Mark Cimino still touring with Devin, or did he just play those New York shows?

orsonb:

I totally agreed with the Faith No More connection on the first band. It was undeniable. The keyboardist looked like Mike Patton, with the suit, glasses, and hair slicked back. I went up to the keyboardist after Devin performed. I told him "You're trying to resemble Mike Patton, aren't you?" He said "No, I don't even know who that is." At this, I was half infuriated and embarrassed.

Pitch Black Forecast was great. Gene Hoglan sounded phenomenal. I had never heard a drummer of his caliber in a live setting before, so this was a real treat to hear. I did not know that the vocalist was an ex-Mushroomhead vocalist. They were a local band that didn't play scene shit, for once.

I remember the drunk guy. There were also these girls who dressed slutty and were really super obnoxious. It's sad that people have to be iditos at shows like that. I was one of the people onstage dancing during Bad Devil, and it is now my favorite concert memory, because Bad Devil is my favorite song, and Devin is my favorite artist.

I also had the pleasure of finally meeting Mr. Townsend after the show. I stayed til the bar area of Peabody's was about to close up, and finally got a whole five minutes to talk with him. I know this is a plug on Devin on his own forum, but he is such a nice guy who cares about his fans. A real treat!! I think this was an amazing event. Anyone who has yet to see DTP live would be a fool to pass up the opportunity.

I didn't get to stick around to (attempt) to meet Devin Townsend after the show cause my ride had to work, but holy crap.
The whole night was really really great. I mean, Seeing him live like made my year or decade or something.
Just about everything from the letter, to the crowd on the stage, and everything was amazing.

Wow what an amazing show. I'd seen Dev once supporting Opeth a few years back but this headlining show was probably the best concert i've been to. I was only going to record one song on my phone, but ended up recording Life, Kingdom, the part of Bad Devil when everyone got on stage and Deep Peace with the interlude that preceded it.

Life was played after Supercrush! if I'm not mistaken. It was the first video I recorded. I'll be uploading them to Facebook and posting links in the next few days because you can't upload .3gp to Youtube.

yes, it was a bad ass show indeed. the set list was great, and of course dev was an absolute character on stage. that guy knows how to make a show fun and interact with the crowd, that's for damn sure. i had an awesome time other than my friend having a seizure waiting in line to get in. while i was taking care of her dev walked right by me shoulder to shoulder and i couldn't say what's up b/c of the situation at hand. that was the only bad part of the night other than the venue choice. not thrilled it was at peabody's. those fucking poles on stage and in the crowd are a pain in the ass, their sound system couldn't handle any of the low end drops and the drums weren't very loud at all, except for the snair drum which was entirely too loud. but dev made the best out of it. he fucking licked one of the poles that was on stage followed by spitting then saying, "that pole tasted like shit!" lol. overall a great time. on a side note, i was extremely surprised to see gene hoglan there. unfortunately old gene wasn't on top of his game that night. his double kick parts sounded like shoes in a dryer at some points during their set.
also, FUCK CLEVELAND! i absolutely hate that city. 30 seconds on euclid ave. and some crazy black man is trying to rear end me then finally boxed me in and started to get out of his car. i just started looking at the directions acting like i was lost and he finally saw that and just drove away.

Great show as always from The Dev, his abilities and presence on stage are vastly improved over the first couple of times I saw him live years ago. He keeps the crowd fully engaged at all times, and they love him for it. Getting everyone up on stage during Bad Devil is one of the coolest things I've ever seen at a show. I was also fortunate enough to have had a VIP pass for the acoustic show and meet & greet beforehand - awesome experience, Dev is hands down one of the nicest and most humble guys you could ever meet.

The opening bands were ok - the first band was most definitely going for the FNM/Patton vibe, and they did it well I must say. That's easier said than done to be sure. The highlight of the opening bands for me was Ceterum, a local band who played on the side stage. They were f'n sweet, kind of a heavy Tool/Meshuggah/Karnivool mix.

I only know a few Faith No More songs and even I was thinking that singer was trying to be Patton. Gene lost some weight, holy cow!

Anyways, here are two vids I took during the show.

Life - Devin licks the post and notices a girl in the crowd on some guys shoulders. Classic Dev.

He did play Life at that show. I was the one who edited the setlist, and I messed it up.

Show was freaking incredible. I pretty much echo the sentiments of the others when it comes to the musical quality, though I appreciated Pitch Black Forecast because I'm a thrash-head. I was to the right of the pole at stage right (The one he licked), and right behind some big guy.

His stage antics were pretty awesome, and the fact that he read the letter I wrote just made it even better. :D
