Talk about other artists here (even though they all rip off Meshuggah)

Yyrkoon - Unhealthy Opera

Image

Where do the French breed all those damn good bands??? This is one good Death metal record! I aleady loved the last Yyrkoon Album but this one simply kicks ass too. Dirk from Scarve doesn't drum on this one so the drumming is more straight forward this time and not so crazy but it still kicks ass. The songs are all solid and you can listen to the record from start to finnish without getting bored. And to make the Album a bit more diverse, you'll find soem really cool acoustic songs in between some of the brutal songs. I always say that you can sort of compare their music with the recent Bloodbath Album, Yyrkoon are just faster..and I like them a little better too. So if you like Death Metal, give this a try.

Zombi - Cosmos

Image

Who would have thought that I could ever like something like that but this is one cool record. If you enjoy space and often look at space pictures like I do, then this is a CD for you. Do you know that really cool synthesizer part in Pink Floyd's song 'Welcome To The Machine'? Then you kinda have an idea what this whole CD sounds like. It's basically synthesizers, a bass and drums. Not very rock and roll, I will admit that but it's really enjoyable. So if you're in need for something different that doesn't need to have guitars, then check this out.
you can download some music by them at http://www.zombi.us

Zyklon - World Ov Worms

Image

This is probably one of the best Albums to release some aggression to. While I liked their Album Aeon, it just isn't as extreme as World Ov Worms. It's basically a Black and Death Metal mixture with a little bit of Industrial mixed in here and there. Unfortunatey there wasn't really a lot of Black Metal anymore on Aeon. This band features Samoth and Trym from Emperor but you can't really compare their music to Emperor's music. The first song "Hammer Revelation" is already worth purchasing the whole CD. After a short intro it just saws your head off. This is definitely no church music! If you need something extreme, listen to this CD and you know what 'extreme' means.

You can check out some of their music here:

Myrkskog - Deathmachine

Image

Did I say Zyklon is extreme? Well, Imagine Zyklon's World Ov Worms without the comfy parts and you have Myrkskog's Deathmachine. I really love this record. Like Zyklon, Myrkskog also got rid of their Black Metal influences after their debut. But this one still has lots of BM in it. Definitely one of my favorite extreme Metal Albums. Check out the song "Deathmachine" on their myspace site at http://myspace.com/myrkskogmetal

Emperor - Prometheus

Image

This is a definite milestone in Black Metal history and probably the best Black Metal record that has ever been written. I guess most people have at least heard of Emperor. Now if you categorically despise Black Metal then you probably won't check this out anyways but it would be a shame because this is truely incredible music. I'd describe this as symphonic avant-garde Black Metal. "In The Wordless Chamber" must be the best Black Metal song EVER. Of course this whole record is anything but easy to get into but when you are not averse to complicated stuff and love your music grim and sinister, then check this out if you haven't already done so!

you should be able to find samples there

Ihsahn - The Adversary

Image

This is the solo Album by Emperor's Ihsahn. I didn't know what to expect but this record doesn't disappoint. You can clearly hear some Emperor in there but it's less than I expected and of course you can also hear the influence of his and his wife's (ex-)project Peccatum which makes The Adversary much more melodic than anything Emperor have done. I'd call is avant-gard Metal with some Black Metal mixed in. The production may not be 100% great but the songs are and that's important. Ihsahn is simply an awesome song writer and you can hear that. So, check it out!

Björk - Homogenic

Image

Wow, why didn't I check out her stuff earlier? Björk is an awesome artist and singer and I guess everybody knows her or has at least heard a few songs of her. You either love her or hate her and I definitely love her stuff and this record, of those that I own, is clearly her best (with Vespertine) in my opinion. The music is basically electronic but very well arranged. And the vocal work is stunning. I had to recommend this!

Textures - Drawing Circles

Image

This CD took me a while to get into but now I really enjoy it. Textures have changed quite a bit since 'Polars'. The Melodic Death Metal elements are gone and have been replaced by rather Hardcore elements which probably has to do a lot with the vocalist chance. You also won't find HUGE ambient songs on this CD and they have slowed down quite a bit. It seems like this CD is more about groove than speed. They are still technical and definitely no easy listening. You can still hear the Mshuggah influences but maybe they are a bit less obvious this time. This CD is definitely a grower and worth to give a try.

Zyklon - Disintegrate

Image

I had high expectations for this one but it did not turn out to be another World Ov Worms as I have read so often in magazines. But maybe that's not a bad thing. 'Disintegrate' is not too dissimilar to the previous record 'Aeon', yet not quite the same. First of all, the sound is much better. I did not really like Aeon's production too much but they've done a really good job with this one. Secondly, there's more fast parts on this one, more Black Metal type screams so I guess you can say it's like a mix of thier 2 previous records. There's also some cool solos on this Album which are a nice addition. If you liked Aeon then you will like this one anyways but even if you had the same "issues" with Aoen as I had then you should still give this one a try, it's definitely better in my opinion!

you'll find the song 'Disintegrate' here (though not the best song on this Album):

I don't have a whole lot to contribute... But Ephel Duath if you haven't heard Bjork's "Medulla" yet, i recommend you try it out. It's an all-vocal album... All the instruments are "sung". Personally, I really enjoyed it :)

I bought all her regular Albums last month :) I like Medulla a lot but I personally like Homogenic and Verpertine a bit more. I like all her stuff except for the "Debut" CD...I don't like that one THAT much but you gotta start somewhere!

STAM1NA
Uudet kymmenen käskyä

First second of this album and my devy-gland is telling me: "This is devin, no, but sure sounds like it". The background choirs, strange vocal hooks, vocal range that varies from high pitch screaming to low growls and then beautiful chorus melodies. Don't be put off by the fact that this is sung in Finnish. Even we natives don't always make out the lyrics of Hyrde, the next best thing in Finnish metal singers. A sworn devy fan.

Guitars crunch like meshuggah and solos are short but innovative. Everything comes out fast and after every turn you are left wondering "what the hell was that?". They seem insane, but then you grasp the sanity in chaos. Sound familar? Order it. Copy it from p2p. But just listen to it!!

Quoting the biggest newspaper: "Sorry Children of Bodom. Stam1na is now making the most interesting metal from Finland"

Head Control System- Murder Nature

Features Garm from Ulver. He is my second favourite vocalist after Dev. Its like a mix of Alice in Chains, QOTSA, Metallica and Tool. Awesome album

That was some awesome stuff ED666. I'll be sure to check some of those out next time I'm in the market to be buying CDs. I can, however, second your notes on Katatonia...that album is spectacular.

Waltari, the Devin Townsend Band / Faith No More / Mr. Bungle / Sisters Of Mercy / Cure / Madonna / U2 / 2 Unlimited / DJ Bobo / Prodigy / NIN / Killing Joke / New Model Army / Cryptopsy / Death / Suicidal Tendencies / Ramones / Beatles / Public Enemy / Beasty Boys / Muppets Show (...) of Finland.

One of the best crossover bands ever, featuring Sami (Kreator), who was temporarily replaced by Roope (Children Of Bodom).

Especially recommended: "Torcha!", "So Fine!", "Big Bang", "Yeah! Yeah! Die! Die! Death Metal Symphony In Deep C" and "Blood Sample".

After a career that spans almost 20 years, Waltari released their new album Blood Sample, an output that encompasses almost every music style imaginable and sounds as fresh as their first release.

Waltari mastermind Kärtsy Hatakka: 'The theme of the album is Europe today, not politically but the general mood. "Helsinki" is naturally Finland, "All Roads" is Germany (autobahns), "Pigeons" is Spain, "Wide Awake" is France, "Julia" is England, "Aching Eyes" is about Nokia workers... and "Digging Inside" is in a way the key song of the whole idea. "New York" is about the relationship and connections between the 'new' and the 'old' world and about our different views on many things, the war on Iraq for example. In "Pigeons" I sing, and Hossni joins in arabic, in a way about all the Mediterranean countries, the whole historical heritage of Phoenicia - the Pigeons! Liberate your mind from musical preconditions!'

Chill out! There are just some spoken word parts here and there that may remind some listeners of DJ Bobo. My point was that they are a totally over the top crossover band (and perfect at that).

Just check them out (start with the video-link I posted).
