There's a reason these guys won Eurovision. They're just fucking awesome in every way.. I honestly don't know how to classify them other than pure awesome heavy metal.

GWAR are better and Lordi ripped off GWAR

I've heard them today for the first time and I immediately bought their last two records on the iTunes Music Store.
They just blew me away. One of the best "discoveries" of the last months.
Check them out!!

Benediction - Organised Chaos

Image

This one's 5 year old already but pretty damn cool oldschool Death Metal with lots of groove to it! Actually I'd say this is my favorite oldschool DM record at the moment. The riffs are sometimes simple but heavy non the less. And Benediction also features Dave Hunt, who is also Anaal Nathrakh's and Mistress's singer. They will also release a new CD this autumn and Nick Barker is their new drummer, should be cool.
Anyways, you can check out the song "Suffering Feeds Me" from that Album at this location:

Nominated for one of Kivenkantaja's favourite bands with SYL, DTB and Opeth.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you:

Amorphis -Eclipse
Image

Ok hands up people how many here don't know Amorhpis? Well you have missed some insanely good music.
This is folk/proge/death metal band with mainly clean vocals but there are still some grunts here and there reminding of the old, pure Death Metal Amorphis but this record is fortunately very far from that. The music is very finnish and lyrics on this record are based on a single tale from Kalevala: Kullervo's story.
I can't find the right words to describe the music because I love it so much. I want you to listen it yourself.
This band makes me proud to live in Finland.

Forget my crappy "review" and listen Amorphis here
http://www.myspace.com/amorphismusic

The first two are from Eclipse. I strongly recommend that you listen 'The Smoke'

Two streaming videos. House of Sleep from Eclipse and Divinity from album Tuonela, which is also a true masterpiece.

Attention Death Metal fans! This is your new favourite band:

Amoral - Decrowning

Image

This has to be the best death metal-band from Finland. Very technical shit and according to band members, some progressive influences.
Awesome band, awesome record.

LISTEN TO AMORAL HERE:
http://www.amoralweb.com

Go to discography and listen Showdown. There are about six tracks and some videos but start with Showdown. You won't be disappointed.

What the media said:
"Poles (and Swedes): don't even contemplate resting on your laurels! Your sovereignty in the realm of technical death metal may soon be in jeopardy." - Terrorizer (8/10)

"bears many of the hallmarks of proggressive death metal at its exploratory best. Balancing compelling grooves with dazzling showmanship, this is a multi-layered album to be savoured at lenght."
- Kerrang! (KKKK)

"a remarkable, enterprising piece of work from a group that would seem to have a bright future ahead of them." - Metal Hammer (9/10)

I've listened to Lordi long before they sold out to the Eurovision thing. I never considered them metal, and they never considered themselves metal. Its pure rock.

Their suits also take 4 hours to put on, and they are all made of metal and steel and shit. Where GWAR's are all paper mache, and styrofoam.

My point? GWAR is hilarious, and metal. Lordi is horror, and rock. Both very good bands :P

The Album Leaf

Beautiful. They classify themselves as "Alternative / Ambient / Electronica". I've only heard the songs off their myspace account, but I loved what I heard som much I've ordered their newest CD "Into The Blue Again" from play.com. Looking forward to hearing it! :)

So, anyway:

yup, good stuff indeed....I only know 'In A Safe Place' but that's a really great Album, very Sigur Rós'ish. And it's actually just one guy.

Swimfail - Borerer

Image

This review is something I have kept putting off because I keep thinking "I will wait until I have the time to do this album justice". However, this has meant that I have put it off for a long time as it is an incredibly complex, challenging and beautiful piece of music. I have no choice but to try my best!

This album is a CDR that was sent to me by our very own Josiah Tobin (you can find him on both SYL and HDF) and was created, recorded, mixed, arranged, deranged and conceived entirely by him. If any of you are familiar with Mr Tobin then you will know he is an extremely productive and creative individual and has a flair for all things unusual, experimental and a lot of the time...heavy. However, this album does not fit straight into the 'industrial' tag that could be used to describe a lot of Josiah's work, though parts of this album certainly do. Borerer is an extremely challenging piece of music because I really don't believe there is a single genre that adequately describes what you might expect to hear on this album...hence my apprehension and difficulty in reviewing it.

When Josiah sent me the album he also sent me some printed text to accompany it. This served as a story to describe what you are hearing. In a way what he has written are the lyrics to this instrumental work. What amazed me about this was how bold and vivid this story was, and how one was just as unusual as the other. The story itself is a dark, abstract tale of disillusion and anxiety. It follows the main characters descent into a dark underworld of fear and despair - or perhaps merely his own psyche. If you have ever read any HP Lovecraft then perhaps you will relate to some of the images in both the text and the audio. I wont go in to the story too much....because frankly I haven't got my head round it yet. This might take a year to understand, as all good things do.

Anyway! The music itself is just over an hour of the most densely layered and complex stuff I have ever heard. This is something to listen to with headphones, to drift off to, to be taken to this other world in. The sound evolves from hypnotic industrial madness to dark ambiance and samples and back again. There are moments that will make you tap your feet or bang your head and also times when you feel the hairs stand up on your back. To think that Josiah has created this without an army of undead nether-worldly musicians behind him is quite amazing. The one thing that ties each track together and that IS consistent throughout is the overwhelming sense of 'lushness'. This isn't just music, this is a field recording from another world. This is a musical where you can hear every reverberation of every set piece.

I think could say that this album is one of those rare pieces of music that is completely thought out. Everything is there for a reason, no matter how unreal that may seem. I can compare it to the album INFINITY by some guy called Devin...err....something or other (!) as they are both musical journeys that are without boundaries. It slows down, speeds up, gets loud, gets quiet, soothes you, frightens you, makes you laugh...but it never stops. There are no empty spaces or times.

This is a complete work of art.

10/10

For samples...contact Josiah Tobin? He did have a soundclick page with some of Borerer uploaded, but that doesn't seem to exist anymore. Perhaps now would be a good time to fix it Josiah!

Yeah, I took it down due to my excessively irrational paranoia about their terms of use. Sorry.
I'll upload some songs/clips elsewhere soon, but in the meantime: If anyone wants to hear some of this just PM me or email me or something and I'll send you some samples.

Also, I know I said it in the other thread already, but thanks very much for the amazing review, Monga. I am in your debt. :P

Just finished uploading a small 3 and a half minute collage of clips from various songs off of Borerer. Hopefully this will give you a small idea of what it's like... Though of course, there's a lot of stuff on there so I tried to pick out the segments that best represent it all-- Did my best, at least.
Download the Borerer sampler here! <---- Clicky
