Talk about other artists here (even though they all rip off Meshuggah)

God is an Astronaut - All is Lost, All is Bright. Kinda similar to Red Sparowes. Kinda.

Boards of Canada - Music Has the Right to Children. Ambient electronica; 100% pure masterpiece. I haven't heard their album before this one, but the ones after don't hold a candle to it. They're still really good though, so if you find The Campfire Headphase at your local Borders/Best Buy, grab it!

Amon Tobin - Out From Out Where. This has so many different things going on at once it's bound to keep you listening for at least a month. breakbeat/DnB.

Hour of Penance - 2007 promo. I believe you can hear it on their MySpace as well as their website. This is brutal death metal from Italy, and it's nuts. They've got it all and execute it perfectly. My new favorite bdm band.

Lykathea Aflame - Elvenfris. Some of the most technical drumming I've ever heard in a melodic death/grind (seriously) album. These guys were nominated for the equivalent of a Czech grammy, which is quite a fun fact. This out-Nile's Nile in regards to the egyptian-themed riffage.

Gorod - Leading Visions. Kinda like what you would get if you put brutal death metal and prog together. Blast-driven, gutteral prog? It's very good.

Ghoul! They're zombies from creepsylvania (really!). Pretty good music, and very entertaining lyrics. Splatterthrash would be the best descrrption, I believe.

I leave it at that for now. :) I didn't read the whole thread, so if I repeated something for the 800th time, please excuse me.

I've pretty much loved this album since I first heard it, probably a year ago. Pretty straight-forward melodic death metal but I think it's really good! I have no idea why no-one has ever heard of this band!
www.maelstrom.nu wrote:There are a handful of things you can notice about Underthreat (previously known as Skulptor) from the first song and title track of Deathmosphere: The guitars are tuned viciously low for death metal, it sounds like B Standard. Secondly, the band seems to have a hefty Gothenburg influence and a decent bit of speed. More similar to At the Gates and the more classic stuff than Dark Tranquillity or more modern stuff. They also incorporate speedy blastbeats and tightly laced harmonic leads. In short, this is awesome, thrashy Gothenburg metal done right with a classic feel and a pleasant lack of similitude between other bands, both modern and older.

The production is strong, yet not as clean and over-produced (read: fake-sounding) as more modern acts put on. It almost sounds like a really precise and energetic live performance. The great production could be due to Chris Djuricic (Novembers Doom engineer and bassist) who has worked with some crushing groups recently and has really succeeded with Deathmosphere to make it sound as brutal as possible. Vocalist John Perez's stamina is also impressive as he unleashes a dense throaty growl that keeps the same consistency throughout the entire work.

The best thing about Deathmosphere is that it feels "real" and makes an impact on you as you listen. I guess you could say it "jumps off of the canvas."

With work this good, there's really no place to complain. They're doing it better and with more gusto than even the very youthful groups are today. Also the included "live" video for "Embraced by Disaster" is DVD quality and looks quite good, however it is obvious with the video editing and such that the album version of the song was overdubbed on the video and it isn't an actual live recording. The lip-syncing on John Perez just doesn't match up, and neither does the guitar solo half way through. Still, it's nice to see these guys in action in front of such a large crowd. The great audio and visuals presented on Deathmosphere make it an album you will want to check out. (8/10)

Arkhan - Machine
Image
This is really cool technical Death Metal from Switzerland with some Industrial mixed in. The samples sound as weird as the cover looks like. Pretty unique stuff. Kind of like...Super Metroid Death Metal, heh. The following song gives a pretty good impression.

Deadlock - Wolves
Image
People into 'Supertrue Metal' should now stop reading this. This Melodic Death Metal Album contains a lot of 'Pop' due to the very cute female vocals but they just fit really well. Just imagine In Flames' song 'Dead End' and you know what this entire Album is like. It's catchy but music can't always be supercomplicated. Oh and the girl in this band is pretty cute! :D

Sonic Reign - Raw Dark Pure
Image
Sonic Reign is a German Black Metal band that pretty much sounds like Satyricon. I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. If you like 'Volcano' and 'Nemesis Divina' then you will dig this Album. I pesonally prefer a good copy rather than listening to unique music that sounds like shit, heh. So if you are into Black Metal and enjoy Satyricon, give this band a chance! It's good stuff!

Antimatter - Leaving Eden
Image
Antimatter's new Album is once again a masterpiece of melancholy. It is less quiet than their last Album, contains more guitars and pretty much no electronic music as it was the case with their first 2 records. I read that one guy from Anathema was involved in this Album and you can defintely hear that. This sounds much more like Anathema (as they sound now) than anything that Antimatter have done so far. So if you enjoy Anathema then give this Album a chance.

Mayhem - Ordo Ad Chao
Image
Well, this may be the craziest Album I have heard this year so far. Attila is back on the mic so you can expect some crazy vocals as usual from him. But this is definitely no second 'De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas'. It is much less straight forward and much more chaotic Black Metal. The production is RAW and really not the best I have heard so far but it fits perfectly to the music. If there is one Album that sounds like it was recorded in hell than it's this one. It's definitely not an Album for everyone but I'm lovin' it.

Pro-Pain - Age Of Tyranny
Image
I have known Pro-Pain for many years, have seen them live for the first time back in 1998 and have always thought they are a pretty damn cool band. And that won't change with their latest Album. Age Of Tyranny contains a fine blend of straight forward Thrash Metal and straight in your face Hardcore with VERY liberal lyrics (that means not very pro-Bush) so if you got a problem with that, you better not pay attention to the words as that lyrical content is all over this Album! I will admit that I have no problem with such content which makes this Album even more enjoyable for me! :D Anyways, this Album kicks ass so check it out!

Dodheimsgard - Supervillain Outcast
Image
This is probably the second craziest Album I have heard so far this year. Dodheimsgard (or dhg) used to be a pretty noisy Black Metal band but they have developed quite a bit it seems. Their new output is very experimental and contains lots of Death Metal, Black Metal and pretty crazy Industrial. This is pretty hard to describe and not quite like anything else I have heard before. But that's what mp3.com is there for...you can check out the entire Album when you follow this link:

Tori Amos - American Doll Posse
Image
Tori just does not disappoint. While her last Album was very influenced by black music, her new Album contains a lot more guitars and has much more of a 'band feeling' to it. Her voice sounds great as always and musically this is definitely one of her best Albums...and definitely one of her longest, if not the longest. It is about 78 minutes long and contains 23 (!!!) songs. Now that's what I call value for money! If you loved her previous Albums then you will love this one too and if you never heard any of her stuff and are not ALL that Metal and can enjoy some (progressive) Pop music then you should give Tori a chance.

God is an Astronaut

They're post-rock, so I guess fans of Pelican/Explosions in the Sky/Red Sparowes, etc might like them.

Yeah God is an Astronaut are very cool, I don't really consider them post-rock though... more like a whole album of Nine Inch Nails instrumentals or smth.

I recommend Minus the Bear, the best rock band evar! Imagine a proggier Fugazi playing super relaxed music that makes you feel like you're sitting on the beach drink beer watching the sunset.

If you think Kataklysm is a bit to slow when it comes to blast beats and speed, check this out. They honour their name, realy a massacre!

Yeah, the drummer isn't Tim Waterson but it sounds like as if he was, according to the speed!

Urfaust

Image

Urfaust is not your standard black metal band. Their sound is very raw, but highly atmospheric, eerie and haunting. Although only a duo, they manage to create something grand out of such a minimalistic and claustrophobic sound. Willem's vocals are one of a kind; varying from tortured Varg Vikernes-like howls to sludgy, almost drunken clean singing and what sounds like mournful ramblings.
