Talk about other artists here (even though they all rip off Meshuggah)

For those who like to make top 10 lists (or whatever number you want), where do you currently place Epicloud, or is it even on whatever list you've made?

I've got it at number 4 at present.

Posted the below on another forum recently. I'm not much of a fan of Epicloud but I think it's fairly solid from Save Our Now onwards. Unusually for a Dev album I think the all the early tracks are pretty muck. However Epiclouder more than makes up for things. I think that's among his top 5 albums.

Aluk Todolo - Occult Rock
A Forest Of Stars - A Shadowplay For Yesterdays
Ihsahn - Eremita
Master's Hammer - Vracejte konve na misto
Sigh - In Somniphobia
My Dying Bride - A Map Of All Our Failures
Neurosis - Honor Found In Decay
Devin Townsend - Epiclouder (the bonus CD - far superior to the main album)
Diablo Swing Orchestra - Pandora's Pinata

Not metal but

Scott Walker - Bish Bosch
Swans - The Seer
Godspeed You Black Emperor - 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!

I'd be the same as above. Don't really rate Epicloud at all... I'd say Epiclouder might just be #10 but there's a few weeks left in the year yet!

I'm including Epiclouder, so I'm treating it as a whole.

Top 5 so far:
Ahab - The Giant
Cattle Decapitation - Monolith of Inhumanity
Blut Aus Nord - 777 Cosmosophy
DTP - Epicloud
Nekromantheon - Rise, Vulcan Spectre

Epiclouder would be my #1, somewhere with the new Dirty Projectors, an album my friend's worked on, and Dead End Kings by Katatonia, the new Overkill, and a couple of others and then maybe Epicloud.

I'll come back and post my list in a week or so.... There's a lot of releases that slipped under my radar this year that I want to check out still. Epicloud and Baroness' Yellow and Green are still duking it out for the top spot as well, so will have to figure that out.

Here's what 2012 looks like for me, as of right now:

Albums:
1. Sigh - In Somniphobia
2. The Mars Volta - Noctourniquet
3. Diablo Swing Orchestra - Pandora's Pinata
4. Ihsahn - Eremita
5. Exotic Animal Petting Zoo - Tree of Tongues
6. Meshuggah - Koloss
7. Katatonia - Dead End Kings
8. Devin Townsend - Epiclouder
9. Metallic Taste of Blood - Metallic Taste of Blood
10. Gazpacho - March of Ghosts

EPs: (only keep a top three since there aren't that many...)
1. Deathspell Omega - Drought
2. Burial - Kindred
3. TRAM - Lingua Franca (consider this an EP since it's barely a half-hour)

Honorable mentions:
-Omar Rodriguez-Lopez' trilogy of electronic records (Octopus Kool Aid specifically)
-Enslaved - RIITIIR
-Hail Spirit Noir - Pneuma (some of the worst lyrics I've ever heard, but musically very interesting)
-Beardfish - The Void,
-Anathema - Weather Systems

...and a few others I'm sure.

Biggest disappointments:
-Gojira - L'Enfant Sauvage
-Storm Corrosion - Storm Corrosion
-Between the Buried and Me - TP2:FS
-Epicloud.

So, no, it doesn't make my main list or even my honorable mentions. Octillus said it best; lower-middle tier Dev album IMO... but Epiclouder? Epiclouder is freaking awesome. Glad to see some love for Sigh here, too!

i really don't understand all the negative comments. i freaken love this album. yea a couple songs aren't that great but they kinda grew on me. i just get such an overwhelming positive feeling when listening to it. and i guess i just group epicloud and epiclouder into 1 "double album" as i like certain songs better on each and it's hard to say which one i like better.

a lot of my favorite bands put out great albums this year. in no particular order:

dtp - epicloud/er
sigur ros - valtari
smashing pumpkins - oceania
ben folds five - the sound of the life and mind
ginger - 555%
coheed and cambria - the afterman: ascension
exotic animal petting zoo - tree of tongues (although no way near as good as IHMMBID)
kayo dot - gamma knife

haven't checked out the new muse yet.

Still working on my list... I've got 7 so far, plus 10 good candidates. And yes, Epicloud is definitely among the top 7. That includes both discs.

Haha, yeah, that Dimebag tribute song is the bomb. Although in fairness to him some of his earlier albums are surprisingly good. Weaker co-writers and his mental health seemed to have affected things badly.

Yeah, Meshuggah is easily the worst record I have heard all year. The only thing that could bottom it in any one of my moods would be Purity Ring because I fucking hate the production on that album. Percussion does not need to be that piercing. Period.
