Cabin in the Woods This was quite nice, a little different look on story told many times over and gives one theory why people act as stupid fucktards on movies. Recommended.

Straw Dogs 2011 version that is. It was okay, nothing much to say about it.

The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 - In a word, perfect. In another word... "Darling!". I'm a huge fan of the graphic novel and this movie just knocks it right out of the park. It plays really strongly to the 80's vibe from whence the source material comes, at times feeling like it's been directed by James Cameron or John Carpenter. The soundtrack really leans towards the latter in places. As always I was a little disappointed back when I discovered Kevin Conroy was not voicing Batman until I discovered that none other than Peter Weller himslef had gotten the gig. Naturally the man does a phenominal job and is another feature of this film that just enhances the feeling of 80's awesomeness. I've watched this several times now and am still looking forward to watching it again. Eagerly anticipating the second part early next year.

Cabin in the Woods - This is the most fun I've had watching a new film in a very long time. Lulls you into a false sense of predictable sercurity before literally unleashing all Hell on you. Clever, witty, anarchic and brilliant. Any film that at the beginning of the 3rd act has me thinking I have no idea what's coming next is very much my kind of film.

planning on buying both of them soon :D

as for me, I watched a shitload of movies again over the past weeks. Let's see....I watched In Time, Mars Attacks, Perfect Sense, Another Earth, The Last Starfighter, Road to Perdition, Lord of War. All on Blu-ray, all of them were great and almost all of them looked great except for The Last Starfighter which was filtered to death but the movie is still sweet! And Another Earth does not look

The Grey:

The short version: I STARTED THE MOVIE EXPECTING TO SEE LIAM NEESON PUNCH WOLVES AND WAS DISAPPOINTED. LEAVING MOVIES OPEN FOR INTERPRETATION IS NOT FILMMAKING, HOLLYWOOD. FUCK.

The long(er) version: I really didn't mind the movie that much for what was actually in it. The atmosphere and horror were pretty well done, and I like how the movie made an attempt at fleshing out the characters' backstories, which is more than I can say for most movies like this. However, I find the movie a bad omen for filmmaking as a whole, because when you can't even trust a movie from its own trailer to deliver on a set-up (Liam Neeson, the Wolf-Puncher), you know Hollywood's getting bolder and bolder with exploiting the lowest-common-denominator audience. I'd probably give it a Netflix stream or maybe even a rent, but I definitely wouldn't pay full price to see it or anything like that.

Cabin in the Woods
What a clever movie. I mean, REAL clever. You think you know the premise, but as it progresses, you become aware that this movie is aware too. I wish more movies, especially in the horror genre, did things like this.

Cosmopolis
A slug paced, pretentious journey with no plot and no payoff. That's not to say all of it is bad. Cronenberg sets an interesting tone with crisp editing and cinematography. Pattison plays the insular, indifferent billionaire surprisingly competent.

Prometheus
I think they were trying to establish a mythos, but were too gun shy to make it more pronounced.
Spoiler: show
Why did the Engineer in the stasis tube try and kill the group?
I will say however that Fassbender's David is unsettling. A stiff, emotionless robot with Aryan features.

The Avengers
The first half may seem sluggishly paced with the character development to, well, develop but it pays off with some great action scenes at the end.

Because,

His mission was to annihilate the human race, which had proven greedy and unworthy of life to the engineers. An event 2000 years ago had brought them to this conclusion. Read the Jesus theories.

I too am tired and can't find the link right now but if you're prepared to trawl back a page or two you should find it - there's a really interesting little essay on Prometheus with some chin-stroke-worthy theories. Worth reading.

I actually just watched Drive the other day myself. Honestly... eh? Don't see the hype, that being said, it wasn't that bad either. It was just kind of, I dunno... there? Total remake of Shane, which I would pick over it. Worst part of it was the soundtrack, which was beyond irritating. I know you want to be a real human being, now shut up and let me watch the damn scene. Ryan Gosling's quiet bad ass thing too I didn't buy... why the hell would the lonely housewife next door think he was anything but a creepy serial killer?

That being said, despite being totally typical, it was mildly entertaining. And Bryan Cranston was in it, so, ya know, +1.

Ah, Drive. Always the subject of fun discussion.

I agree with the soundtrack being shitty, and it was too slow in parts, but I still thought it was decent.

Watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail on BD recently. The transfer wasn't that much better than the DVD, to be honest. That snobbery aside, the extra features added for the Blu-Ray were cool. And the movie is still funny as hell.
