^^ Nice basses dude!

How the HELL did I miss a thread like this, especially containing a post like this?

Nightshine wrote:I picked up the bass a few months back under the inspiration of such bassists as Mariusz Duda, Geddy Lee and Chris Squire. It seems so natural, so flowing to me. However, I can't compose on it for the life of me, so I go back to the guitar, TRY (and I mean TRY as in take multiple dumps in my pants (not literally)) to write, but alas...nothing.

I think I'm just going to focus on my bass playing for now, then go back to songwriting on the guitar later.

Oh man, Mariusz, Geddy and Squire are AWESOME. I don't hear about a lot of people who appreciate Mariusz' playing; which surprises me because he's a really talented and creative player. Upon really listening to his riffs, you can hear that they're pretty busy and complicated at times. He's clearly a Geddy Lee fan!
He's even got a hard-core bass face, check this out:

Anyway, that's cool. All three of those guys are on my "favorite bass players" list. I keep track of such things, my list is probably 10 people long or thereabouts

Now to the important stuff:

Fretless jazz bass

And here's the two together:

I have a compressor, Whammy, flanger, distortion, delay, and chrous as far as effects go.

Perhaps some bass players might find this amusing, I did :D

Dean 5 string bass from some time around 1991.
Into an even older Laney 15" cab (150w - though I swapped out the speaker which had about 89dB/1 w, with an Electrovoice with 96-98dB/1w. Making it effectively a 700w-ish compared to standard amps! )

I've had Peavey basses, a Fender Precision (absolutely dire!), a couple of Aria Pros - one of which is paint-free upstairs in bits partly after being stripped, a couple of others.

The Dean though - man oh man - I've had Ibanez lead guitarists say it was like playing their guitars instead of most bassses!

I like a nice clunky toppy sound though - like Chris Squire of Yes. Almost at the edge of breaking up, or even over if I play a good solid slap or some chords.

I hate hate HATE HATE jazzy, smooth amps like Trace Elliots. Can't stand them - I keep wanting to put holes in the speaker to get some dirt and clank in it. Man.
