Pff... that's a difficult choice. It depens on the kind of music I'm playing. For pop, jazz & standard rock I prefer Gibson (SG's and ES), but for metal it's only ESP for me. I haven't got one, because they're unbelievably expensive.
Btw... PRS are nice guitars, but WAY too expensive for the quality you get.

You can get bargains when you buy second hand, both ESP and PRS. PRS is the best value guitar I have ever had. Just got to know what you're buying. You can get used USA PRS for a price of new LTD ESP easily. And should too.

Bought my first PRS in 96, and played the hell out of it in the following years. This guitar is still in amazingly good condition (I've been careful with it, but it has been played A LOT). I have dragged its case through the snow into an unheated rehearsal room in a 140 year old watermill which we heated brutally with a propane burner (like, from 5° centigrade to 25° in five minutes). I haven't had to adjust the trussrod in 7 years. I haven't had to adjust the tremolo AT ALL in 8 years (stayed at the same string gauge throughout).

I've worn the frets down, but that's about it. Pots no crackling, jack not shorting, switch is still solid, tuning stability still great.

Now, after 8 years I've come to appreciate that they're really worth the price. I've a Gibson USA guitar that after 6 years of a LOT of playing needs much restauration (all screws rusting, potis crackling, output jack broken, switches sometimes shorting, the black eloxation of the tremolo shows weird corrosion, a crack appeared where the neck joins the body, which is worrying with a set neck, and the pickup pole pieces are corroded - WTF?). THat guitar has NOT stood the test of time, and it wasn't exactly cheap either. Not as expensive as the PRS, but still.

Haven't owned a ESP yet - but I think I can only really judge the value of a guitar after it being played for a few years, so you can see what was just polish and embellishment, and what is of real substance. And in that regard, *I* haven't been disappointed by PRS.

It's all a matter of taste I guess. To be honest I haven't got much knowledge about the technical (and I'm not talking about playing) side of guitars. I've been playing for only 5 years now, and usually when a guitar is broken down I get it fixed at a 'good' guitar-store/builder, or I just buy a new one, same goes for when I need a new sound.
I had a PRS once, and it's just one model and one guitar, so I just came to conclusion too fast, sorry 'bout that, but this PRS I had was very expensive (1350 euro's), and I liked my Gibson SG sound much more than that. I bought the PRS because I wanted a guitar for my rockplaying, because I thought PRS had that edgy rocky sound to it. But anyway I traded it for Fender Mustang, which was a great deal.
As I said before it was only one PRS, but I discussed this with the other guitarists in my class (who are all way better than me at playing and technics), and they all came to the conclusion that they didn't like PRS. I don't know... maybe it depends on the country. I don't see them around in many local bands either.
In the end it's still all a question of taste...

Can anybody tell me about Ran guitars? From what I've heard about them so far, they're the real deal, and I've even heard a few people say that they'll never buy a US-made guitar again after playing a Ran custom job they ordered. I'm probably gonna come into some money around the beginning of next semester and was thinking about getting a custom from them, since they seem to be quality, affordable, and not near the wait time of a major (Jackson, ESP) company's custom shop.

I'd have to say that I hate them all at this point and that the only good guitar you'll get is a custom to your specifications made by a guitar luthier who puts all his care into your instrument.

If I had to choose from the list though, Ernie Ball all the way.

Currently I guess ESP. Jackson is not that good unless you get one of their 1000+ € guitars and you also need to replace the pickups. Ibanez is just overrated and personally I don't like a Floyd Rose or a copy tremolo, makes the guitar go out of tune when palm mute riffing (dunno about the ridiculous models though (3000 euros +).

Gibson would also be a nice choice, but they are too damn expensive.

I was balancing out between four guitars on which to get:

Ibanez UV'97BK (used)
Ibanez UV777PBK
ESP Signature SC-607 Black
Schecter C-7 Blackjack

But I'm gonna get the SC-607 over the others.

The UV'97BK has Floyd Rose
The UV777PBK is butt-ugly
The C-7 has bad pickups, which would need to be replaced right away.

The SC-607 is impressive though, exactly what I'm looking for

i prefer tama. ha haha. Thats right drums. Their also a good instrument to play. Go the dev and Hetfield explorer!

I personally prefer Ibanez out of the models I've played. And I have to say this...after playing a PRS I am SO not sold. I found it to be an over priced basic guitar that had NO character at all. In fact I found the body was somewhat unintuitive. It seemed out of whack for arm position.

I was going to get an Ltd...mainly because ESP's are too damn expensive...and I don't fully believe that brand name guitars are worth the 2000+, unless you get it done from the beginning to end custom. The ESPs I tried were very solid and I liked what I tried, a Lynch Kamikaze being the highest...however I found a lot of them felt hollow and fake...I think those were the baritone though.

Anyway I started on Strats and will always hold a special place in my heart for em...but I had a 333 Dime Washburn that was fuckin brilliant. Just a little impractical...

I find that Ibanez is the best bang for the buck. I just picked up an RGT42 flamed maple top neck through model that is just super smooth...

I can't stand Gibsons, maybe that will give you an idea about my tastes...and I was going to get a Jackson Soloist...but yeah Ibanez seems to be a reasonably priced guitar for what it is worth.

Down with PRS and their new 'Mesa Boogie' type hype. It's like this giant bandwagon...and I remember being 13 and lookin at the dragon blue PRS thinkin man I bet that is fuckin awesome to play. 13 years later I sat down with a $3500 model and frowned as I played a dried up bone dick of a 'rich mans' guitar.

I'm still hurtin after passing on buying an ESP Horizon II...and not because of Dev using it in the catalogue...but because it is a sweet model and a nice looking guitar.

The SC-607 is impressive though, exactly what I'm looking for

I played the green finished version of one of those suckers... I will tell you this right now. It is a sweet piece of lumber. It is actually pretty damn impressive...I didn't think the guy from Deftones had a purpose, but apparently this guitar is it hahahahaha

I concur with your decision, it is a VERY nice guitar...just a little expensive because it had whats his nuts name on it.

Very hard choice considering different guitars suit different styles.

I love playing Jacksons. Also love clean strats (as well as distorted but clean rules), I played this Cole Clark guitar called a stealth which definitely deserves a mention as well.

I just love guitars, there's no guitar I dislike.

I currently play my sweet little SG epiphone copy. I have to admit, it looks better than it sounds but it does the job. Its matte black, has 2 piercings and a big fuck off hole in the shape of a cross which goes right to the other side. When I play gigs, goths seem to like it (one even licked it).
