im having problems writing my own music. i have plenty of lyrics which i am happy with but whenever i try to write any music to go with them, even though im playing in drop D, everything i come up with either doesnt satisfy me or it sounds too much like The Devs music. Devin is a massive influence but i want my own sound.
any one got any hints on how i might refine my style/sound to make it different???

If I was you I wouldn't worry about it. Just let your own sound develop naturally, there's nothing worse than something that sounds forced to be a certain way. Developing your own sound generally takes some time, so just relax and have fun..the more you write, the sooner it will happen

think about certain styles or genres that you want to incorporate into your music. an example is when i thoght id add some latin style music into my regular industrial/funk/metal etc... came out very defined

go with the flow...
Stuff eventually writes itself in the way is was meant to be.
I find that trying to get a sound can really muck things up... as you get lost in you intentions.
I believe only well experienced musicians end up with the sound they wanted in the first place... but i believe the best songs by those muscians are the ones that mutated and evolved.
This is how I make music. Im no genius... i just fuck around on the frets in open c. and soemtimes shit sounds wikid sometimes it sounds crap... othertimes it sounds like a pure rip off of soemthing else... but in a weeks time it sounds totally different.

You are what you eat, or in this case what you listen to. If everything you listen to is really similar what you create will sound just like it but if you vary your tastes a little you should start to come up with something new.

Very true. As soon as i started listening to jazz and stuff, all of my music changed drastically, it became more free. Definately try mixing your different inspirations together to see what you come out with.
