Any idea how Devin gets his sounds?

Is it midi based? If so what program does he use? I'm writing my own stuff on Logic using the ones you get with it and can't really get anywhere near the depth he manages with his, or perhaps I'm just doing something wrong.

If anyone can recommend me anything It'd be greatly appreciated. :]]

I`ve been using Logic for some years now. All the onboard synths/instruments and so are great if you take the time to learn them. The exs24 library is crap though. But if you do not like the instruments that ship with Logic..

I use the Native Instruments Komplete bundle..it is..lets see..FUCKING AMAZING!

I Intend to get myself EWQL Orchestra, I would like to have the VSL library (a miniversion of this comes with the NI Kontakt Library btw) but it costs to many damn $$$ yet. and I want the EQWL Symphonic Choirs, and the Spectrasonics Omnisphere.

How are all the packages and which do you use most? I've only seen videos but Absynth looks like a pile of sex.. I'm wondering if you can confirm that it is in fact as good as it is sleek! Honestly I'd never heard of the package before you mentioned it.

Yeah, Komplete 6 is the latest version, I run v5 still though. I use all the NI instruments, but I think I have used kontakt most.

Absynth is great. For most of the time I use it when I`m looking for atmospheric/strange pad sounds. But you can use it for a lot of other things. Massive is also cool for creating more complex sounds with evolving patterns and so on. And the FM8 is incredible! Try it out for melodic lines and leads, it sounds brilliant for everything else too. The last month I have been learning Reaktor. I think Reaktor is the coolest thing I have ever tried. It is a quite advanced program though and I still have a long way to go before I`m good at it. Reaktor is the most supergeekish softwaresynth out there for sure. The B4 is also super, I think it sounds a bit better than the B3 organ that ships with Logic. Battery is good, have not used it that much yet but it has some advantages compared to Ultrabeat in Logic. I realy love both of them. Kontakt ships with a much better sample library than EXS 24 so I have used it a lot, with the library that comes with it and others. Pro 53 is also quite good, but I just looked at a demo of the Prophet 5 remake (hardware) the other day and it kicked the NI plugin in the balls..

Take a closer look at Sculpture in Logic btw. It is capable of some extreme stuff if you take the time to learn it. It can come up with sounds that no other synth or sampler can do. You can create sounds and instruments that sounds like real instruments you never heard before. Like some of the ones I have programmed that sounds like both a bowed string instrument, a flute and a saw at the same time.. very impressive tool.

this is a strange little story for those of you interested in synth/samplers and such things.

Around 2003 i quit using my old sound modules and was slowly converting to the new software thing everyone was shouting about. Have been using only softwaresynths and samplers since then. I sold lots of expensive synths and so on, but one broke on me back in 03 and I have had it collecting dust since. A E-mu E4 Platinum sampler. I just got it back from repair now. I got it fixed so I could sell it, and I still intend to do so. But here is the freaky thing....

I put it up when I got it back, loaded some sounds from some old outdated sample banks and played around. It sounds so god damn amazing. Being used to large samples and no worries about the size of the files this is "shocking". I loaded up a reversed pianopad taking up like 1MB of the 128MB memory and it blew me of the chair. The sound is so fat and warm, pure beauty!

I just made som sci-fi/horror theme using sounds from the E-mu just to discover once more how damn good that unit sounds. Then i played back the same theme using ESX24 in Logic and layering lots of extra pads and I could not get near the E-mu experience... I will try out the same theme using Kontakt 3 tomorrow.

The E4 series had a reputation for having the best ad/da converters in the world back then, so that might be the explanation.
