Hey guys and gals,

http://www.box.net/shared/o5nyj1n5ts

I've been working on this track for the last couple of days. I'm quite happy with the results. But the song was intended to be a song for my band 'Black Lotus' but i'm worried that my prog rock and minimalist influences are too noticeable. What do you guys think? Is it an interesting take on black metal at least?

I definitely like the progression and melody there (the main reason I'm interested in you guys' music)... though I admit it's totally impossible for me to hear the drums 'right,' it always switches to the snare leading in my head because I can't really hear any of the other drums-- really messes up my perception of a riff when that happens. :( I like what you have there, though. The whole 'beautiful, melodic black metal' thing somehow really wins me over, if you'll pardon such a flowery description. :)

Well, if this song makes the cut I hope to have real drums in it. Regardless, you're right. You can barely pick out the high hat during the blasting parts. I shall turn that up. When i do a proper mix down I'll try to eliminate a lot of the competing frequency. Thanks so much for the feedback. I'll repost when i'm put more hours into it.

Coming out to the show in Feb?

I'd certainly like to! I'll check out what's going on for me around then and see. Pretty likely though, I'll have just moved in and won't have all that much to do for awhile.

I don't understand your worries, are you afraid you're being to ambitious? Thanks to music like yours I finally considered black metal music worth attention, before it was just Badly Produced Music by the Cat Eating People of Grim Northern Forests*). I can only sign under Josiah's opinion.

I guess I'm worried it strays from the black metal genre too much. But you're right, I shouldn't be worried about such things. If anything it gives it character putting so much personal influence in it.

Anyways, you should check out Emperor - In the nightside eclipse

That was the black metal album that won me over. I'd recommend headphones and give it a really focused listen. It is a fantastic album.

I do believe that as an artist you shouldn't have reservations about your own creations treading into unknown fields. But sometimes when you're working in a band, you'll have to, or so it seems to me.

ha, so true. In a band you definitely have a style to uphold especially when writing an album. You want as much consistancy as possible to make it a fluid listen start to finish. There are many examples of musicians/bands that can mix and match very well and still have a very consistant album. hmmm, devin townsend comes to mind!
