We tried metal but it didn't work, so let us in on the punk rock dough!

This post requires a little bit of explanation.

Been listening to Punky Brüster a lot lately. Like, really a lot. It's actually becoming one of my very favourite Devy albums.

While I love the album and invariably listen to the whole thing through from start to finish, sometimes I'm in the mood to listen to just the songs themselves. Take Recipe for Bait, for example - one of my favourite songs on the whole CD - sometimes I just want the song, without wading through the 3 minutes of setup (intro + Malone's) at the beginning. Which, if you've got all your music on your iPod, is really difficult to skip through while driving.

I've now re-imported and re-timed the whole CD, and separated all songs from their intros (or outros), including the 3 bonus tracks. This will yield a total of 23 tracks, including all spoken word segments and bonus tracks. Things like "Zeppelin!" and "You're fired, metal guy!" don't really count as separate intros/outros, and are incorporated within their repective songs. Whereas the heavy metal managers' production meeting, the Granny Awards, etc all deserve their own individual tracks for the purpose of this excercise. Other things, like the arrival of Dr Skinny's wallet chain ("Thank you, Mr Postal Man!") are more an intro to "Wallet Chain" rather than an outtro to "Oats, peas...", but it now has its own track as well.

For those of you with iTunes, it's easy enough to do:

Re-REPLACE your Punky Brüster CD.
Highlight all tracks and go to Advanced > Join CD Tracks.
Import CD.
The whole thing should now come up as one long track, 58 minutes and 42 seconds long.
You can now change the start and stop times of each song, and again under Advanced > Convert selection to *** (AAC, MP3, WAV, etc) make a copy of the song with the altered start and finish times. Change the name, and away you go.

Here are the start and stop times for each song, assuming you begin with one long song:

1 - 0:00.000 - 0:38.000 : Welcome to Cooked On Phonics
2 - 0:38.000 - 2:41.133 : Tuesday Night at Malone's
3 - 2:41.133 - 7:26.600 : Recipe For Bait
4 - 7:26.600 - 9:47.400 : Fake Punk
5 - 9:47.400 - 12:31.050 : EZ$$
6 - 12:31.050 - 14:01.200 : These Voices, They Are Holding Us Back
7 - 14:01.200 - 16:51.200 : Metal Dilemma
8 - 16:51.200 - 17:34.100 : On The Prowl
9 - 17:34.100 - 19:09.000 : Oats Peas Beans & Barley
10 - 19:09.000 - 19:23.550 : Special Delivery
11 - 19:23.550 - 22:14.900 : Wallet Chain
12 - 22:14.900 - 22:49.180 : Disrupted Bowels
13 - 22:49.180 - 23:59.950 : Heinous Anus
14 - 23:59.950 - 24:33.000 : Groupies
15 - 24:33.000 - 28:08.800 : Heavy Metal Mama
16 - 28:08.800 - 29:20.800 : Dr Skinny's Bed-Room
17 - 29:20.800 - 32:11.500 : Crusty's At The Ivanhoe
18 - 32:11.500 - 35:38.500 : The Granny Awards
19 - 35:38.500 - 39:22.700 : Picture Of Myself
20 - 39:22.700 - 39:59.000 : The Moral Of The Story
21 - 45:33.000 - 49:28.700 : The Girls Next Door
22 - 49:28.700 - 55:18.000 : Larry's O
23 - 55:38.700 - 58:42.133 : Metal Heads Are Punk Rockers

So there you have it. For those who have the inclination (and not eveybody will), I hope that helps.

That's pretty freakin' sweet.

Got a few days off now, so I might see if I can get a chance to try that out.

Thanks Ro!

Some programs like CD-Ex do this, too. When I was making my Hevy Devy CDR for the truck, I removed the skit bits, and fixed the tracks that aren't split correctly.
