ive used latex quite a lot and the only way i know how to use it is to apply it with a brush. It starts out like that PVC glue consistency and then drys to an orangey rubbery latex like substance.

i would use it to create moulds for plasticine sculptures. so i would literally paint the wet latex over the sculpture.
to make a mask i imagine you would have a mould made of silicon possibly and paint layers of the latex into that.

Dev sculpted the model out of movie effects plasticine. They made a silicone rubber mold of the sculpture, painted the inside of the mold with latex and filled it with foam. The foam was then hollowed out to make room for the hand. So, he's foam with latex "skin".
