I can sing a good bit of Dev's stuff, but those screams totally elude me. Especially the bits where a clean note blends into a scream. I hope it clicks one day!

Vocal fry is the other end of the spectrum - it's essentially croaking out low notes, which is basically what he's doing to produce that low, spoken C2. Assuming that wasn't a "hangover from half a bottle of whisky" croak

Indeed again. It's almost like he's taking the clean notes and just adding grit and dirt to them.

im getting pretty close to the pitched dev screams, and theres no secret, just scream your balls off lol, i started wit htrying to get the "nobodys here" scream and the "see how the breeaaaaaak dowwn brrrreaaaks dowwwnnn" part its really good at practising the slight grit, but then "zero the dials...yeeaaaaaaaaaaaa" gets easier and easier, i could try a video of it sometime if you like

It seems that most of the screams Devin does, are his falsetto voice combined with a very large scream distortion (some like to call it 'fry'). It is difficult to master without damaging your voice. Therefore, I take it very slowly. Maybe Devin is not totally aware of this vocal technique, but he certainly is very talented in doing it so naturally... There is always some technique to any good voice usage.

I think it would be best to first make sure you can reach the clean high note and make a proper screaming noise separately and then combine the two! At least, that's my perspective on it... Feel free to comment if you disagree.

You're totally right about the screams sounding like two different notes. If you listen to the isolated Juular scream, you can clearly hear a lower note, plus higher overtones. It's really interesting.

They really aren't that insanely hard compared to a lot of the clean stuff Devin does (Supercrush, The Way Home, Notes From Africa, Dynamics). I think this video REALLY stretches what people think Devin can do. The screams can't really be accurately pitched, and a good amount of them are pure speculation (with some of them near the end being completely retarded to count).

Devin has a hell of a good voice and range, and it would be FAR more accurately displayed in a clean singing video.

You might be able to hit them, but to sing the song in its entirety is very different. If you can do that, then you're just a good singer. I can also hit the high notes, but I sure as fuck can't sing.

Screaming puts more of a strain on your.. everything, but it's not really fair to count it as part of a single vocal range. People can be TERRIBLE singers with VERY little range, but excellent screamers.
