I've always said that if you can't find very much you like locally, you're not looking and listening hard enough. Check out 'The Amenta', truly unique, as much as Alchemist. Psycroptic are incredible. Have a listen to Synthetic Breed's 'Catatonic' album, it's world class. And Brisbane's 'Empyrean', again world standard symphonic Black Metal. Even give Sydonia a try. More 'Alterna-Metal', but nonetheless amazing. Didn't support Stone Sour across America, and Slipknot and LOG across Oz for nothing.

And that's amazing news about Alchemist and Dev!!

Yes, it's excellent news! I heard about it on Alchemist's Myspace. Can't wait for that.
Thanks for the recommendations about some of those local acts. I'll have to check them out. Every now and then it helps to get pointed in the right direction musically. You can get a little stuck in the safety of the bands you already know and trust, but that only leads to staleness in your taste. So, cheers for that!

I tell you what - I'm getting so pumped now for this DTP show. I said to my brother the other night, if he closes with 'Awake' from Addicted, I'm absolutely going to lose the plot in that mosh pit. These days I'm a little more sedate at gigs, but I'll be making an exception for this show. And like I said, if he closes with 'Awake', I won't care if I die in there - it'll be sheer bliss ;)

Excellent. The first step is having an open mind like you obviously do. Alarum are another one I forgot to mention.

Yeah, I've seen Devin/SYL at least 3-4 times, but I'm probably more pumped about this show than ever!

Pretty sure i saw Alchemist at the first SYL gig in Melb. They got this big tribal ring motion goin in the crowd.
Haven't got into much of their stuff since Spiritech. Some Dev production should make em sound awesome.
Local band from Frankston been getting my attention, Eddy current and the suppression ring. Not metal, but heavily groovy. New material won't be out for ages, be good to see some live.

I asked the same question a little while ago. The answer was yes. I got pumped up.
So in the spirit of the upcoming tennis match between Hewitt and Federer.... COME OOOON!

Bloody Lley-Lley. What a deeply unlikeable athlete he is. Only time I can think of in my lifetime where I can't bring myself to support an Aussie.

Shame about Stosur though.

I honestly couldn't give a rat's arse how likeable or otherwise a sportsman is. I don't have to have dinner with them, I just support their athletic endeavours. I was rooting for Leyton. He actually played quite well, and Federer won in a canter in straight sets. Sums up the situation, really (saying more about Rog than Leyton).

I agree with you for my own part - I couldn't care less what they're actually like. But what I resent is the great effort the media/marketing/industry machine behind sports-stars goes to to present them as such great people. It's a real problem in football (AFL). The AFL goes to extraordinary lengths to get their players to be squeaky clean role models for kids. They don't want to acknowledge the side of football that is, in fact, pretty rough (and I'm not talking about tackling). So, inevitably, a footballer does something stupid in public every now and then (no more stupid than something regular Joe might do, btw) and they get crucified for it because of the risk to the sponsorship arrangements and the reputation of the club. I often feel that these fellows don't really get to be who they are; the expectations of them are too high. Shit, they're not exactly running for office where every word is scutinized for political advantage to someone. It's a tough sport for tough motherfuckers, but they're expected to be high-society gentleman. It doesn't work for me.
Haha, sorry about the rant!
Lleyton got outclassed, but he was never really going to beat the Master :)

You make some good points mate, I agree with you. I follow football very closely, as you can probably tell, and the same rings true. I really don't care what they do off the field, as long as they're not hurting anybody. If I see Fev wandering around with a 12 inch dildo hanging out of his pants (actually dress!), I just think 'what a dildo' and move on. When they do overstep the line, as we've seen a fair bit lately, they get punished. The punishment seems worse in the face of the public/media scrutiny, but that's the choice they make, isn't it? Both to choose a high profile occupation AND to commit the crime....

Totally. Yeah, my real beef is with the media though. They do this not just to sports-stars, but pretty much anyone in the public eye. They build them up into these mega-entities and the moment they fuck up, they tear them down again mercilessly. The media set it all up because what they want to see is the blood, the dirt and the tears. However, what they love perhaps even more than that (certainly in this country) is the comeback! When a bad-boy/girl finally "comes good". I don't even know where to begin with someone like Wayne Carey - his is a particularly complex example, in my opinion. Either way, my sympathy is with the stars caught in the middle because, even though they do behave badly sometimes, they really have no power - they are taken advantage of left, right and centre, and I hate to say it, but a lot of the footy players aren't the sharpest pencils in the box, so they're easy pickings for savage media-types who's only real concern is profiteering out of a player's triumph or misery.

Again, agree completely. But, we digress from topic!

So, how 'bout that Hevy Devy guy, eh?!!!

Agree with just about everything just said, particularly regarding footballers. The way Ben Cousins was hounded for having a personal substance abuse problem was ridiculous - every day people in this country who are in FAR more important professions, such as medical practicioners, teachers and magistrates get away with worse. It was his issue, and West Coast's issue. Not ours. What right do I have to know about his personal problems, let alone judge him for it? No right at all.

A healthy enjoyment of sport has been turned into a media obession with personality and "role models". Any parent who presents a footy player to their child as a role moel in any capacity other than "THAT'S how you kick a footy, son" is missing the point entirely. The AFL is also partly responsible, as they market the code as squeaky clean, when it never was in the first place. It's footy!

Adam Gilchrist got it right the other day - we're in danger of forgetting who's really "important", with this mindless cult of celebrity.

Back to the Lleyton thing, generally I don't care about an athlete's personality either. Warney being a case in point. Dull as a bag of rocks and capable of being a genuine arsehole (and I speak from personal experience), but the best cricketer I've ever seen, and I would have watched him bowl til my dying day - a true sporting genius. Same with Collingwood players - they could be total tools, but they'd still be my boys! I just find Lleyton highly irritating - it's just a personal reaction to what I see. I still watch him play occasionally as his matches can be very entertaining, due to the grinding style he has and his sheer tenacity. But I won't actively "support" someone in a professional, non-representative event just because they were born in the same country as me. I actually kinda hope Roger wins another Grand Slam to add to the legend.

So... Devin indeed.
