The place to speak about Dev's current projects, and everything yet to come

Why does nobody like Damnation or Deliverance by Opeth? I don't get it. Blackwater Park's very good, don't get me wrong, but I love nothing more than to sit down to their more sing-ee stuff from Damnation and let it wash over me..

I can see where Dev's coming from with Meshuggah. They have an absolutely unique sound that can't really be impersonated and Fredrik Thordendal has the most distinct sound you could imagine.

Ulver I'm relatively new to, but I still like them well enough. Kveldssanger (sp?) is class and they're very easy to listen to. They have very varied genre ideas, from black metal to ambient? That's a big leap..

Not only does Devin produce top quality sounds, he also has quality influences. I approve!

I love Damnation :)
Deliverance sounds a bit... clinical to me, lacks the atmosphere that Opeths other albums have. I think that's because the two albums were recorded at the same time, and focus was on Damnation because it was different from the usual Opeth.

Damnation is OK but half the fun of Opeth is the switching from tralala to GREOWARRAFDSCSD parts, and it doesn't have that. Deliverance is just boring, the first song being straight up 10 minutes of their dull death metal really hurts it.

Damnation is lush, dark and beautiful.

Deliverance does sound quite clinical compared to their other stuff, 'raw' perhaps. I think this is also the most heavy album they have released, possibly for the same reason. I think you might be right that they will have had to divide their efforts in some way, perhaps giving Damnation the extra atmosphere.

Still, as a double whammy, I think the Damnation-Deliverance package is great!

I wonder what Devin thinks of Dredg and Porcupine Tree.

I'd love to know that too. and I'd really love to hear his opinion on Maudlin of the Well and Kayo Dot.

Dredg is an amazing band. They dominate at creating the whole "wall of sound" effect, with the combo of the 80's Rush-style guitar hits and the lap steel tremolo picking. My brother turned me onto them when they released Catch Without Arms, and I've kinda worked my way back. Awesome stuff.

I like both!
Andy Sneap's mix on Deliverance is as powerful as always, if a bit same-y to lots of his other productions/mixes. The repetitive ending part of the title track is a work of pure rhythmic genius!

I guess it's just people trying to make me think they know anything about Opeth then.

Ulver's definitely up there in my top 3 favourite bands, and I really enjoy Perdition City and Bergtatt in particular... but I really don't enjoy Blood Inside! Kinda strange really. I can't peg what it is though... just doesn't seem as focused, feels a bit "plodding" to me.

Unfortunately I haven't seen Lyckanthropen or Svidd Neger, cause I like those two soundtracks but I want to know how their music fits in with the movie.

I didn't know he mixed it haha. That's probably why I can't stand the album, his sound is so zzzzzz
