The first round results are in for Group 1, and there were already some interesting results, most notably 10-seeded Ants upsetting 7-seeded Soul Driven Cadillac. Meanwhile, in the Ocean Machine bracket, Things Beyond Things and Hide Nowhere ended in a tie, resulting in the latter advancing by random number generator. What will happen in the quarterfinals? Here's a preview of each matchup:
Ocean Machine:
#1 Bastard vs #9 Voices In The Fan: I was hoping to see Night advance, but Voices in the Fan knocked it out. It now runs into Bastard, which narrowly lost in the Elite 8 last year to eventual runner-up Funeral.
#4 Life vs #5 Seventh Wave: Both songs lost in the second round of 2012's Devy Madness. I see this as a tossup. Me personally? Seventh Wave is among my all-time favorite Devin Townsend songs.
#3 Funeral vs #6 Hide Nowhere: Fresh off its close victory in the opening round against The Scream, Hide Nowhere attempts to continue its winning ways against a song that buried most of the field in 2012.
#2 The Death Of Music vs #7 Regulator: I expect this one to be pretty close. On paper, DOM should win. But there's something about Regulator that always makes you come back for more.
Infinity:
#1 Bad Devil vs #8 Wild Colonial Boy: I've seen how it feels when it's over; barring a major surprise, Bad Devil's going to keeping moving closer to your little friend.
#4 Truth vs #5 Christeen: If we're factoring live versions, Truth would get my vote. I like Christeen's studio version better. These 4/5 matchups are all tossups.
#2 Noisy Pinkbubbles vs #7 Ants: Can the ants scurry to another upset and make a run at an automatic bid? We'll see what the noisy pinkbubbles have to say about that. I've always had a thing for Ants, but I'm not sure if I could pick it over Noisy.
#3 Dynamics vs #6 War: You can't fight a war without losing blood, and life is all dynamics. Ponder that while you're figuring this one out.
Physicist:
#1 Kingdom vs #8 Death: This matchup is fitting, because Death is probably gonna die.
#4 Material vs #5 The Complex: Oh hey, another 4/5 death match. I'm taking Material, but this could go either way.
#2 Planet Rain vs #7 Jupiter: Planet Rain lost in a 4/13 upset against Christeen in 2012; could they lose to Jupiter? And for that matter, where is Planet Rain? This matchup might start an interstellar war.
#3 Namaste vs #6 Irish Maiden: All life never goes away. Except for Irish Maidens; they got betrayed.
Terria:
#1 Earth Day vs #8 Mountain: Mountain got underseeded in my opinion, and it pays the price against Earth Day. This one might be close.
#4 Nobody's Here vs #5 The Fluke: You get the idea. Close matchup between two great songs. I like one song better than the other, but a bunch of other people might disagree. We'll see how this goes.
#2 Deep Peace vs. #7 Tiny Tears: Speaking of songs that got royally underseeded, Tiny Tears takes the cake. Every time I play that song in my car, I always change the lyric to "I'm 23 years old..." That doesn't sound as catchy. Perhaps I can get away with it at 25. I'm pulling for TT.
#3 Canada vs. #6 Stagnant: I feel like Mountain and/or Tiny Tears would've had a better shot against Canada. Stagnant will probably get stomped, but stranger things have happened.
