if you were asked to produce a 2cd best of compilation of devin townsend tracks, which tracks would you pick?

for arguments sake over the length of tracks, lets assume that cds dont have an 80 min limit, but they can only allow 10 tracks on each cd.

oh yeah, and lets also assume that century media are allowing syl tracks on it too.

what would you pick?

ill stop here though. I purposly avoided a lot of syl tracks, only adding 3 because i would really miss them. There are other tracks i wish i could have squeezed in here... Ultimatly, any TRUE best of would be a boxset with EVERYTHING inside it.

I'm going to ignore SYL because there are already two SYL compilation albums. Also, as I feel it takes A LOT of time and testing to get a track order that would flow perfectly, I'm going with a completely chronological order. AND despite what the OP says, I'm gonna go with the 80min CD length thing to maximize the amount of tracks

But I'd also like to point out that with the inclusion of Deconstruction and Ghost next year, it would get tougher to fit my favs into 2 CD's (still possible though with a bit of tweaking). This would be the basis though. There are a couple of songs I'd be ready to swap for great new songs and there's also room for 2 or 3 more songs as it is so yeah: I think it would be possible to make a pretty kick ass Devin greatest "hits" album after the end of next year. Of course the complete album -experience is ruined but that's an another matter.

Normally I'd agree, but sometimes if you don't want to invest yourself in Infinity, there are a few songs that actually work well independent from the album.

Accelerated Evolution is entirely this way, and the first 4 from Ocean Machine are this way too.

And let's throw Stagnant and the Fluke in there too, why not?

I know this is just opinion, but I feel like if you really tried you could pull some stuff out.

I dunno... something like this. I tried to pick tracks which are strong as songs even when detached from the context of the album, and show the variety in the Dev's material.

the best kind of best of is a complete back catalogue... theres only really 1 or 2 dev tracks i skip if im near the skip button. but if im over the other side of the room, i let them play.

i should add, that its not because i dont like those tracks, its just the ones after are better.

for example, sister is one i tend to skip. i dont know why, its a nice song, but doesnt do much for me. it doesnt life me like the rest of the album, and kinda sends me in a different direction. bad devil used to be another, but i dont mind it so much now.

What I would do first, is to invent the 'ID'. This is not a normal Compact Disk, but the improved 'Infinity Disk'. It has an infinite amount of capacity!
Then, I would consider all the songs Devin ever made being on that single disk.
If you leave one song out, Devin's story won't be complete anymore!
