All hail Ziltoid!

Can we do this now? Like I mentioned before, a friend sent me "Planet Smasher" on e-mail a while back. I couldn't resist, and I listened to it. WOW! That's all I could think when I heard it. This song gives me goose pumps every single time I listen to it—especially when its LOUD! It's easily one of Devin's best songs ever. (The end of it's a bit cheesy.) The build-up in the beginning is sick! When the Planet Smasher awakens and roars to life, I literally get giddy! It's one of those moments in a song that's virtually impossible to explain. It's just ridiculously amazing!

And that's just the first two minutes! The rest of the song is brutal and melodic and beautiful at the same time. It's an unbelievable song in my book. Yes, Devin Townsend is one of my all-time favorite artists, but as big a fan as I am, I continue to find myself in awe of what this guy is capable of. I have plenty of "all-time favorites," and most of them continue to please me. Devin continues to amaze me.

Yeah, this is definitely one of my favorite tracks from the album. The intro pretty funny, yet rediculously badass at the same time. The part that always gets me though is the "Please do not release the Planet Smasher, mighty Ziltoid..." line. Very nice stuff

The main guitar riiff in this song is incredible.

Did Devin do the voice for the Planet Smasher?

My favourite part is when the Planet Smasher goes "tell me what you want from me" then the song continues. Just has a cool vibe to it.

I think so, Devin is the only one credited for vocals in the booklet. And Beav and Dave for additional dialogue.

Yeah, it's Devin. And it's outstanding.

that part sounds totally like dimmu borgir! really, could have been from them (xcept 4 the lyrics), but that's cool. some nice new influence.

there's a hell of a lot to like and be amazed about in that song, and also in the whole record. for example, planet smasher features one of those strange, exotic melodies that pop up all over the record. you know, like the "ta-da-daa-da-da-da-da-daaaaa"-thing in ZTO.
really cool stuff.

It's one of my "less favourite" songs on ZTO, but I like the Cod Metal King meets IR8 vibe. And the 'all I want to be is the universe' part rules!

I wonder if the growls are electronically "altered" or tuned a bit (at least there seem to be more than one layer of vocals)? Or can Dev really growl so deep? If he does it for "real" he is a better growler than Akerfeld, i think, and should do it more often! If it´s electronically tuned a bit, that´s of course okay, too. I know that Dev is one of the best metal singers ever (if not the best) and his vocal range is fantastic, but i never heard him growl so deep.

PS: If Dev can really growl that way, i would declare him to be the best metal vocalist right now... However, the Planet Smasher vocals rule.

There are some deep growls on Terria, the beginning of Mountain for instance.

Nevertheless I was surprised when I heard it. Dev can just pull it all off, soft rock singing, heavy metal screaming, death growls... "Simple!!"
If he'd have to sing in an opera I'm sure he'd nail it!!

Nah, it is surely a pitch shifter used on the voice. Same at the beginning of Mountain.

I love Planet Smasher, it reminds me a bit of Zen
