I hope the drums are better produced this time. That was the weakest kick I've ever heard.

Wow! Thanks!

Nah Dev. That was perfect drumming for the album. It didn't sound hard or fast or anything. The drums echoed nicely and it sounded like the drummer was playing like he was in a very relaxed state, just like how the album is itself. Nice and relaxed.

I'm not saying the drumming itself was bad, and I can easily ignore the kick in the mix, but I shouldn't want to ignore it. I hardly expect it to be a hard metal kick (notice I didn't insult the snare for not having a shitload of punch, because that wouldn't make sense), but I didn't like how weak it did sound. The production was otherwise better than any of your releases.
Anyway, since Addicted will apparently be slightly heavier and less atmospheric I guess I don't have anything to worry about?

I'm sure he meant it with love.

Or... that other thing.

Ok, I take it back. Upon listening to Gato, I find the barely audible kick slightly annoying.

I meant it with love. It's easy to ignore now, but it could be awesome, and it detracts from the rather spectacular, um, everything else if I do pay attention to it as it is.

Barely audible? Maybe you guys would benefit from adjusting your sound settings. It's not prominent and it shouldn't be, but it's plenty audible - When I'm listening to chill music I like the feel of a constant hum, not the pounding of a bass drum. There's a time and a place for it and I don't think "here" is a good answer.

How do you feel about Synchestra and AE after all this time? Compared to Dev's other work, I mean.

The way you've described Addicted is sorta how I'd describe Ziltoid. How do you feel about the Ziltoid CD?

To answer your first question, I think AE is an awesome album, Dev achieved what he wanted out of that record and I'm proud of it. Synchestra... well that is my favorite Dev solo record along with Ocean Machine. I love Synchestra and am extremely proud of that recording... wish we toured it a bit longer, the songs on that album are so fun to play. Overall, I really like how AE and Synchestra stand up to Dev's other solo albums. I think they blend in perfectly. Every solo album he releases has a different flavor just like his new album "Ki" which is amazing by the way.

As for the Ziltoid disc... FUCKING AMAZING!!!! I love that record.

Hope this answers your questions...

a) You get to jam with Devin

b) You have heard Addicted already

Anyway, welcome back RVP.....you are way too good to NOT play with Dev in some form.

Dan

Thanks for the kind words Dan.

I'm stoked to be jamming and recording with Devin again and trust me, my hype on "Addicted" is not over blown, it's the truth. This upcoming album is going to be awesome in every way, from the songs to the production and right down to the playing. We're going to nail this fucker!

For the record, I think the drums sound awesome on "Ki". Dev gave me a copy of the album and I've listened to it like 30 times by now and I love the production. Production isn't always about the slickest sound or biggest kick drum, it's about making the sounds work with the music. It takes a talented producer to hear these different sounds and get different sounds for different records. If you threw a SYL drum sound on the "Ki" record, it wouldn't work plain and simple. Everyone has their opinion and that's cool but I think Dev nailed the right sound on "Ki". It's supposed to be laid back with a 70ish type of feel to it on the drums.... I think the production is awesome in that regard. Again, just my opinion.

Best,

Production is obviously about the slickest sound and the biggest kick drum, don't be silly. Moar click plz. =)

I think I was a bit misunderstood (not surprising given the way I phrased that. I guess I felt like I had to be a dick to counter-ballance my Ki worship or something?), but if not that strikes me as almost as bad an excuse as loudness and Metallica. Of course I guess it is a matter of opinion if you find it more chill like that, and I suppose I don't have to worry about the next two having a bit more click, since from what I've heard it's obvious for the style. Actually Deconstruction probably will have SYL style drumming, although I'd hardly ask for that for Addicted.

Also the poster above me, while not being especially serious there, has amazing production in his work. Albiet all of his work is metal.

Ryan, was just wondering how you'd compare Addicted to anything else he's done - from descriptions along the lines of really happy pop-ish metal songs I'm getting a Physicist feeling, but then with others like big overblown chorusey songs I'm getting a Vampira/ Far Beyond Metal feeling...

...am I way off?

Either way I think Addicted is my most anticipated release of the four, purely because it sounds the most interesting. Good luck with the recording!

I think the drums sounds immense on Ki!

They fit perfectly to the style of music which is the whole point really, you wouldn't want Def Leppard style drums on every song ever made woul

You've done a fantastic job on Ki dev! This is the first album for a while that i listen to and it feels like something so much deeper than just 'entertainment'.
