That's what I see. It's those colors in the promo release picture, except they're like in a brighter, more powerful version of the default windows media screen-saver thing. And they flow in a "straight line", like over a highway, but weaving. And they're like light, so there's particles and then there's waves. And the thing that changes more is the atmosphere around the colors and the manner in which they weave than the actual colors themselves, though they change a bit, getting colder or warmer.

Hyperbolic in nature.

Thought I'd check in quickly after reading up on the last week.,

Here's my two cents...

Addicted's color - White Fucking Hot!!!

Cuz this album is fucking awesome. That's it!

Thanks to all of you who congratulated me on my recent marriage, that's awesome and you all kick ass! I'm officially married now and starting my Honeymoon in a top class 5 star resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic! Good times...

I can't wait to get back and hear the rest of "Addicted" being recorded. I know Dev's bustin' his balls to make this album awesome. Go Dev Go!

Back to the beach and Sun Tanning and relaxing... I need it, early May nearly killed me  Later everyone....

Best,

RVP

So, I'm not trying to be an as$hole (fuck this censorship) or anything, but for those of you associating colors with music who aren't synesthetics, where does that association come from?

As a synesthetic (if only mild synesthesia), I can tell you that the reaction is automatic upon hearing the music. It's not something I imagined beforehand. So, what's the deal?

The Oid wrote:Personally I'm hoping the next album will be completely spherical.

I don't think Devin has ever written a completely spherical song

Is that music-shape association or a metaphor?

I can't speak for other people obviously, but I don't think I am a synesthetic , but you can still assocate certain colours with music, same as you can for emotions. Each colour tends to have its associated objects, feelings, sights, and I guess logically sounds too. (For example, most people would associate ocean sounds with the colour blue.)

I love colour, and the theories and such support colour and how it can have effects, or no effects on things. So I guess by exploration (Through artistic and scienfitic measures,) I have a lot of connections to colour through a few mediums.

So, that's how I'd associate colour with sound. I know the responce there isn't automatic, I'm not claiming to be synesthetic, I don't think my reaction is automated as such, more like... The connections are there, and certain sounds, (In this instance) poke my into imagining the colour.

-shrug- I just think it's an interesting topic. :D

One in five people are synesthetics and are not aware of it. That's only 20% of the population, sure, but it's not TOO uncommon.

I can't say for sure how anyone not a synesthetic would associate color with sound, but I imagine the answer to your question is somewhat similar to the difference between an automatic and manual transmission in a car. Albeit someone without it will not get the full experience, they can still feel it.

Plus there's a whole science to the electromagnetic spectrum.

I'm aware that you can associate colors with music. I'm not putting it past anyone. I suppose what I should have asked is why, other than for personal enjoyment, and with what consistency. Is it arbitrary? Is it the strongest sensation that's related to some word as well as some color (for instance, a song called "Ocean Machine" being blue, since the ocean is blue)? Is it related to frequency (this would be pretty damn cool: sound waves and electromagnetic radiation are quite different--hell, one's longitudinal and the other is transverse--but it'd be "neat" if there was some relationship between synesthetic reactions and frequency relationships--or even parallels in dispersion relations).

I'm not totally sure what you're getting at with that statistic, but it would be nice to have some background on it. It seems like a rather difficult thing to measure, especially if it can be generalized to the global population. So again, I'm not trying to be a dick, but if you're trying to tell me that maybe these people really are synesthetic and just aren't aware, I'm confused as to why that would preemptively assign colors to specific collections of sound they haven't yet experienced. Not to "look down" on anyone (hell, there are few things less important), but I just don't get it. My only explanation is that it's the excitement for the release of Addicted, and there has to be some physical connection to a currently intangible want.

Again, I'm not doubting that they can associate (we've all been doing it for quite some time now, anyway) one thing with another. I'm asking why, given the condition that it's a conscious association (and if it's not, can you make it one?), do you choose the colors you do (see above)?

I'm an astrophysics student, and I get more of my fair share of the study of electromagnetism. The more relevant study here is likely the study of the human brain and cognition, since the actual waves likely play a very small part (although it could be quite interesting if they do). It seems that sometimes the unexplainable in reality is due simply to an inability to explain ourselves...

I'm a shizznaseptic, I associate the colors of words with the taste of sound.

...That sentence was a bitter, burnt umber.

There's an actual condition called synesthesia whereby sensory input gets crossed and interpreted via another sense--for example, people will see colors for certain tastes, "hear" pictures, etc.

So, did you actually read any of the thread or did you just jump in? (Look at the posts above Dev's.)

That's (shizznaseptia)^2, I think.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!! Damn I haven't laughed that hard in weeks......Maybe I am not synesthetic. Maybe I should've kept my mouth shut. This thread is getting interesting though....and way far off topic.

Hey Dev,

I just heard about something Dream Theater are doing for their upcoming album. It's called Producers Edition, where you get a bunch of extra stuff, plus every track in every song for budding engineers to play with. Ever since I heard each individual track in Killer Queen (amazing to solo Freddie's tracks), I've been hooked. They are selling for $125 which is pretty expensive, but I really like the idea of what they are doing, and it would be unbelievable to hear all the tracks for one of your songs.

Also, in return for these free tracks you're giving out, I and others I'm sure, would love to make a small PayPal contribution to say thanks, is there a place where we can contribute?

Thanks for all you do Dev, get that design for your new site finished up!

Producers edition is in the works for the box set, not all songs from all albums but some...

Don't worry about a contribution, it's no problem!

This is an absolutely awesome idea. If I could sift through every track of Soul Driven, Truth, or Dynamics I could prolly die a happy man. Now, to play devil's advocate...this could be bad too. What if I never hear those songs the same again? What if I was hearing more than there actually was? (This happens to people with my own music). However, there could be MORE than I anticipated....which would be exciting. Thoughts?
