Thing about neoclassical metal is - its extremely fun to play, but extremely boring to listen to. Its great to warm up with, increase technique and all sorts, but in all honesty, who really listens to yngwie bar guitarists?

The "Petrucci Shreds" vids are great though. Tasteful and hilarious. Plus in reality he's super nice and has some great phrasing. Dream Theatre would be one of my favourite bands If I could stand James LaBrie's vocals. Shoot me if that's sacrilege.

Any use of 7 strings on Addicted?

Sheesh....I created a monster with the Yngwie comment didn't I? I am going to hell for sure.

I love James Labrie's ability, but when he tries to sing "heavy", it is a real turn-off. I would prefer it if he just sang like he did on Images and Words.....

7 strings on Addicted would be choice.....

When DT as a band try to be too heavy its kinda funny, like on the last album SC with Portnoys cheesy 'metal' vocals, can't remember the name of the track.

I'm all for bands pushing boundaries, especially when they're as talented as Dream Theatre - just there's pushing boundaries and sounding like arse.

You read my mind.

I think Dev, Anneke and TJ all on one song and tiny things in my brain start popping.

I really like that kind of sound myself (although I don't listen to Yngwie). That said, I am a guitarist, so
To be fair though, I did like that kind of sound before I started playing guitar.

Just got Jeff Loomis's album "Zero Order Phase" a week or two ago, it's awesome.

Oh it comes across very impressive. I think maybe its a thing that once you gain a musical ear, you realise its just that - Scalic runs. It doesn't sound awful, if its the odd riff or lick then it can sound great, but when somebody just does harmonic minor runs up and down the neck, it becomes a bit much of a muchness. Jeff Loomis is very talented though, and can actually write a song, so no complaints. I'm at this stage at the moment where im finding alot of fusion/jazz players impress me. There's a few youtube's of some hybrid picking in some wierd ass modes that wowed me. On another note, check out Marco Sfogli - Andromeda on there. Arpeggio from about 7-8 seconds in has been in my learning targets for a while now.

but to quote the devster himself...
"Wow....Lame!"

I too have been looking around for new techniques.....I have been getting into doing long, long arpeggios with f-ed up tunings, so it sounds like I have 8 fingers. Dev created a monster in me when he started making riffs like that on Infinity/Infinity EP, Terria...etc. I don't really care if they are blazing fast.....just musical and maybe a bit original (finding the lydian notes).

If anyone has On Demand (Comcast) they have guitar lessons on there, and there is this jazz guy named Vic Juris. I have learned more from watching this dude than any of the shredders on there....although Paul Gilbert continues to rock my world.

And....Tosin Abasi has been kicking my ass as well. How cool would it be for Devin to work with him?

Yeah quite awesome, but wish he would get another tone, it's identical to JP's.
