Thats very cool actually.

I think that I´m just confused about nickleback because theyre from my town and I had heard that they thought I was lame.

Ok...let me think.

I can definitely understand the point of view that you have. i find listening to nickelback is rather condescending, but then again, a lot of pop music is like that. i think they treat their audience like they are stupid, because the audience doesnt mean so much to them. when you get fame on such a large scale, they just tend to be pieces of your pay cheque.

The beauty of your music is that it is multi layered, not only are we given an opportunity to find our own meaning within the song, they are also based upon your life experiences. it helps people with similar life experiences to grasp your music and feel a connection to it.

That is why you have such a loyal fan base, because you treat your fans with much more respect, not only on a personal level, but on a musical level :)

OK, I thought.

Daniel is cool, I´ve met him...killer drummer too, his Martone stuff is sick.

Scott Cooke is an amazing friend and a killer enigineer.

Never met any of the other guys.

I´m sorry...I have to make this record, I don´t get it (Nickleback) I´m sorry to be hung up on it, it´s just in my face living in Vancouver...I want to make a point about Canadian music. I will never be invited into the ´club´ for whatever reason, and I don´t think that will change if I try to suck up for some chance at being a part of that machine in order to feed my kid.

I want to make an observation musically. I´ve wanted to be accepted in Canada since the beginning, and apparantly I´m invisible, so I think now would be just as good a time as any to say: I DON´T ACCEPT YOUR MOTIVATION! Avril, Nickelback, etc etc...

I DON´T GET IT!!! I might be missing something, but have any of you ever tried to watch Canadian idol? Or Muchmusic?

REEEKS of effort.

There are INCREDIBLE musicians and artists in Canada that have to LEAVE Canada to make any real headway. And then once you LEAVE, You are NOT INVITED INTO THE CLUB.

I LOVE Canada, but our fence-sitting personality is reflected in the music that we support. ´b´ grade versions of already proven music elsewhere. SAFE SAFE SAFE, having an identity in Canada is a LIABILITY.

So, I´m sorry...I know my point will be lost on those bands, they won´t care, Or hear it actually, but AS A CANADIAN I have to make this point.

grrrrr.

I still hold hope however that I´m missing something, and that it is actually ´high art´that I am too egotistical to see...maybe theyre all masons, maybe the Canadian music industry converges in graveyards near Yorkton in the winter and figures out plans to utilize our cultural identity in order to sell millions of inoffensive music...WHY AM I OFFENDED?

I think it´s because I´m petty and jealous.

That is all.

I´m in Norway at the Inferno festival. Back to Van. Tommorow.

Man, that is cool that you're at the Inferno festival! My friend is there. Heard that Meshuggah cancelled their show there...That sucks. Anyway, any other reason for being in Norway, or just the Inferno festival? :D

Cool stuff Dev and I can def see where you want to come from with Addicted and I'm a big AE fan so I'm pretty sure I'll accept Addicted with open arms.

The Canadian music scene was always a lost cause. Whatever talent we create moves down south where the record companies and famous producers are.Our music station is a joke and is giving in to the MTV way and hardly plays music at all anymore. We just want to be as good as the states but it will never happen. Our close borders and similar cultures just make it so any talent we receive just moves to where they can make it the most

It's hard to pinpoint what makes Canadian music genuinely "Canadian" as the majority of our artist see most of their fame outside the country

I wouldn't be caught up on Canadian acceptance Dev; global acceptance is where it's at half my friends don't even know SYL is a Canadian band it's just the way it is in here Canada; the states will always prevail they are the empire to our rebellion, the randy to the mr. lahey. (TPB reference [Canadian TV show]) They are the boss and we are the pencil pushers.

Nothing wrong with jealousy, if you realize that that's what it is and try to move past it.

Buuuut, it's a useful emotion in some cases. :D

jeez, I just looked up the Something in your Mouth lyrics.... oh no. Most songs that have lyrics about dance floors are shit. I have yet to find an exception. But what's this? "ripping up the dance floor...So much cuter with something in your mouth." :? Awkward =/

There are TONS of people that love Townsend all around the world, for sure! No question about it. Absolutely. Hope Devin doesn't forget that.

Dude, Canadians fucking kick ass...ALL MANNER of fucking ass...unfortunately, just the ones you never hear about.

Thats why I have to make this record, because we are being misrepresented...(not that anyone will hear but...)

Trust me, Addicted is going to be fucking awesome, and it´s going to sound JUST AS GOOD as any ´pop´ album.

I wrote two songs today:

1) I too enjoy ejaculating, can I have a Juno? (ok, that title might evolve...)

and here´s my double entendre, sang LOUDLY in a 3 minute, super catchy chorus:

2) Contain Us

fuck em, up the irons!

Dude that bitch from lights won a fucking Juno. This is why I have no respect for the Canadian music scene

but it still doesnt mean we fucking rock!

I like Kataklysm and old Cryptopsy some good Canadian metal there

It's funny though, when I think of Canadian music I think Devin Townsend, I also think Jeff Waters. For me I tend to associate Canadian music with talented players and musicians. And some of the most extreme music I've heard, like SYL, Annihilator and such. Hell stuff like Gorguts and Cryptopsy is good stuff aswell.

Avril or Nickelback don't even enter into the equation. To me they're generic straight of the conveyor belt American label bands, I don't even see them as Canadian.

I think general view here in tiny little Iceland atleast is that these folks aren't Canadians so people don't associate their music with Canada.

On the other hand, when I think Canada I also think Celine Dion, she can sing though there's no doubting that.

Corb lund and the Hurtin' Albertans? Fuck yeah dude!

too bad the smalls disbanded :(

I seriously think my town coined the term "hurtin" as we call losers "hurts" and something that sucks we call "hurtbag"

As far as I'm concerned though, you'll never be wildly popular and completely supported in Canada because, unfortunately, your music dosen't "sell." At least not like Nickelback and Avril.

Nickelback seems to appeal most to the midwestern United States demographic oddly enough. Why? Not sure, but my friends who live in Illinois and Utah say they are insanely popular beyond belief. Honestly, people forget they're Canadian, and that's kinda the point. As artists who want to make it big, they obviously try to do what sells. If that means appealing to a certain audience image-wise, then they will do what is necessary to increase sales and popularity. I personally feel like Nickelback would try and disassociate themselves from their roots to be simply generic hard rock, appealing to all and not "from" anywhere.

People have an easier time connecting if the details they relate to are more vague.

As far as being invited into the club, face it, it's never gonna happen; not because you don't deserve it (if anyone does it's you!) but because you're frankly too ahead of yourself musically. Far too dynamic and eccentric to catch on in the big time. Your works range from the most intense music on the planet, to the sweetest of lullabies.

Frank Zappa comes to mind because his fans laud him with the loudest of praise but he's not in the "club" anywhere - eventhough he is an undisputed musical genius.

Plus, would you want to pigeon holed as the guy who made that nice catchy song, or the guy who has made some of the most prolific and diverse music? So far, you seem to be leaning towards the latter, and we all love it that way!

I know a lot of bands on Long Island have utmost respect for you but could never do half of what you do because they have an image to preserve. All I know, is that your works thus far have been awe-inspiring because there's always something more to it then just music. Whether it's a mental shit you're taking, a parody, or some very contemplative thoughts your works are very poignantand do more than simply sound good.
