Ki

I should invest in some allergy pills. I decided to have a sneezing fit this morning instead of sleeping in.

pre-ordered Ki too....

and bought a shitload of CD's at a festival...not an enjoyable festival...where I helped a friend sell CD's and merch. I'm too lazy right now to write it all up so I'll edit this post at some point, heh.

and I ordered several movies a few days ago too...I think Saw 5, Storm warning and american history x were among them.

Shweet. Good CD's, those.

I bought some picks somewhat recently. 1.26mm, 1.52mm, and two 3.0mm. I'm trying to decide which one is right, and how to use it.... since I've never used a pick before  Not really planning on being a picker, but it's good to be versatile and know how to do as much as you possibly can, ya know.

Except slapping.

Slapping can add a nice texture to music if used correctly.

Picking on bass is great, especially for metal. I think it gives the bass a stronger tone that finger playing doesnt give. Now for bands like Opeth and such, picks are a no no.

Most of my songs are recorded with using a pick to play bass...but I use the same 1mm nylons I use for guitar lol.

If Tony Levin is slapping, or someone else respectable, who hasn't just been sucked into the undertow of Flea... I can deal with it. The Crimson song "Sleeples" is a great example of appropriate slapping which adds texture like you said. However, it's ubiquitousness and use in poor contexts has made slapping really really ... grating. :x It'd be ok if it would die and then come back in 10 years. This is all just my opinion, no one take offense.

About picking: picking is a perfectly acceptable and useful technique. I have nothing against it, just most of the song I've learned are by non-pickers*; and since I learned finger-style, that's my staple.

Oh! About Opeth - I think that Mendez fellow is really classy. I find it refreshing that he uses fingers with a 4-string jazz bass for some songs. You don't see that too much in metal.

I've never ever seen Mendez use a pick, and the signature Fender jazz bass is definitely his favourite, only seen him play with that and some blue ish 5-string. Speaking of slapping, he does that with a 5-string on Night and the Silent Water. It was awesum live.
