The place to speak about Dev's current projects, and everything yet to come

Am I the only one currently thinking Ghost >>>>> Deconstruction?

Admittedly, I'm not an overboard fan of the incredibly heavy stuff. I'm 100% into most of Devy's heavy stuff (bar a lot of Physicist and a lot of SYL, sadly), and I'm more in it for the solo stuff like Terria, Synchestra, and Ocean Machine. They're just perfectly pitched. Of course I love Devin's vocals, especially the heavy ones, but SYL was always too intense and too constant for me.

Also, I'm a big fan of The Hummer (and other ambient musicians), Ki, and all Devin's mellow stuff. Deep Peace and Nobody's Here are big favorites, as well as In-Ah! and Funeral/Dynamics (whilst not acoustic, they have that atmosphere). Ki had that kinda style on a few tracks but there was also the whole blusey/jazzy style like Ain't Never Gonna Win... which was in there, which was cool but I think I'll prefer Ghost from the sound of it. Listening to interviews where Devin describes the sitting-on-the-beach-just-with-an-acoustic kinda thing... it sounds brilliant. I'd love an atmospheric Ki-Hummer hybrid. I don't know if it's exactly that, but whatever it is, I hope it's cooking nicely.

But I'm prepared to be proved wrong. Thoughts?

The concepts and bits I've heard so far make me think I'm going to like both of them. Obviously I can't really speak about them yet, but I'm glad the plan is to release them simultaneously. I think that contrast will do nicely, and I'm looking forward to both of them.

Yeah man, I grew over SYL a few years ago and I've really been digging the more mellow stuff lately. Been checking out some classical and ambientish music lately, more minimalistic stuff and loving it so I'm definitely looking forward to Ghost! Moreso than Deconstruction.

I'm interested to see how Dev will fare stepping back into the heavier flow of things, but in terms of excitement and anticipation I'm looking way, way more forward to Ghost. I've always been a mad lover of ambient music since I started listening to metal a few years ago but recently the metal has fallen away in my taste, leaving a lot of ambient shoe-gazey floaty things to take up the mantle as my most listened to type of music. I've been hoping for a really soft, acoustic-y Dev album since I first got into him. While he was a master of making aural punishment, I've always thought his best talents lay in making softer, more beautiful sounds.

I dunno. Worldly things make me angry so I don't want music pounding my brain as well. The lighter stuff is far more relaxing and offers that greater escape from whatever surrounding reality I usual crave from music...

Oh god, ever since I went to the acoustic show in San Francisco, I have been so stoked on Ghost. You're not alone, bro.

I'm excited for both, though I think Ghost moreso, if only because the stuff he played at the acoustic show from it. Haven't heard anything from Decon but I'm most certainly looking forward to whatever surprises Dev throws at us with it.

I am intrigued by Deconstruction, but definitely looking forward to Ghost a lot more. Just because I'm personally a little bit 'over' the heavier side of things. I still love it, but can't listen to it very much. Ki's my fave album right now, so I'm keen to see if Ghost will top it :P

i've always liked DTB/solo stuff much more than SYL but i'm kinda looking forward to decon over ghost. mostly cuz i'm sure it won't be that comparible to SYL. i agree that releasing both at the same time is a great idea and i think it would make it easier to appreciate both.

What's so wrong 'bout being into heavy? just because Dev ain't do it anymore it's stupid now? It's just a question, i'm not being agressive or expressing any kind of rage, just asking, it seem that this behaviour it's taking the forums lately

To me it feels like a case of we're all growing up and generally speaking getting 'over' the heavy stuff. Not hating it, just not being as into it as we once were, as our musical tastes are changing. And coincidentally Devin's new, more mellow sound happens to be something we're enjoying which is why we're all still here and still cheering Dev on. I wouldn't like to think it's a case of 'just because Dev ain't do it anymore it's stupid now' - that would be worrisome.

Well, that's just how I see it - I'm sure everyone else has their own take on it :P

I think there's probably more hype with Deconstruction just because there is more in question with things like the lineup. To me Devin Townsend is Devin Townsend and the basic aesthetics of whether it's huge extreme metal orchestrations or an acoustic guitar doesn't really matter, it's only the outside layer of everything. I think there's no real reason to anticipate 'which album will be stronger, etc' because none of us have heard either of them yet. Sometimes when talking about music it's easy to forget that words are just words, and that's all we've really heard from Devin regarding these releases. That said, he puts more honesty into his work than almost anyone I can think of, so I'd be surprised if both albums aren't the absolute shit.

I genuinely am looking forward to both equally.

Whether it's Devlab, Alien, Terria, Ki or City, whatever it is that's on all of those records I just flat out NEED in my life.
As a matter of fact, being brutally honest, practically every album Dev's released I can happily sit down and listen to from start to finish today and enjoy it as much as my first listen. All save SYL for some reason I can't quite put my finger on. Even at that there's still some cracking tracks on there like Relentless and Force Fed that still raise goosebumps on my goosebumps.

My only wish is that when I order these albums that they don't arrive on the same day. Such an event would likely result in an unholy interior dialogue/argument as to which one should be listened to first.

I reckon Ghost is going to be a little better than Decon, just because I judge all heavy music now against SYL, as nothing can ever come close to their insanity.
