I'm still confused as to why SYL is considered "djent." I'm all for the "genre" of "djent" (8-string technical wankery?) but I don't really get the whole "djent" thing, or why SYL is "djent."

I'd never heard of SYL being "djent." I've heard "black metal" or "extreme metal," but never djent. The guitars in SYL are definitely not djent.

Devin's asshole is probably the size of a flea right now.

Djent.

Until now, I had never heard of djent. Just as well.

I think it's a term that has gone back in time and retroactively applied itself to a bunch of 7-8 string and baritone guitar metal bands that have been around for a while. I'm in the same boat in so far as I like a couple bands that are under the 'djent' umbrella but can't stand the name or the people that are really into it.

Damnit, I just wanted to listen to Animals as Leaders as a crazy instrumental prog shred band, not a djent band. :chain:

There's a little "djent" stuff out there that I enjoy, primarily the works of Animals as Leaders and Jakub Zytecki, as to me they represent exactly how "djent" should sound, versus the many blatant Meshuggah rips, too many of them having clean poppy vocals (WHY???). If I want to hear Meshuggah, I'll listen to Meshuggah!

Regardless, my buddy named his cat Djent, here it is licking its shit

Anyways, thanks for the update(s) Dev, its flat out inspiring to see how far you push yourself with your work. It really gives me a drive to work harder towards my own goals.

Ha, I agree labelling it as a new genre is ridiculous, but you said youself that you like Periphery and Tesseract!

Also, I kinda get the feeling that the reason its causing such a stir is because nothing REALLY new has happened in metal for quite a while, and everybody is getting excited.

Best,

Wow I feel so against the flow now. First of all, I think it's a rare case of genre name (yes, that's a genre name already, why people try to deny that?) which was invented (or popularised at least) by levelheaded person with a sense of humour (Bulb, I mean - feel free to correct me if he's an asshole, but as far as I see he's cool). It hasn't "core" nor "death" or even "metal" in it. How cool is that?

Then, it's a totally legit genre. How would you categorize Periphery or Chimp Spanner. Technical metal? Well sorry, but I'm conditioned to not expect any groove from my bog standard technical metal. Let them have their little niche, they deserve that. Sure there's lot of hopeless copycats, but where's that mythical genre that doesn't have crappy specimen?

I'm also pretty surprised how people attack it as a fad. They're getting uncomfortably popular I guess. Even if popularity is 2k listeners on lastfm.

How is it even pronounced? Are the 'd' and 'j' separate syllables? Or is it like a soft 'g'?

Seems like it's an onomatopoeic word, but I can't visualise how it's supposed to be said.

Djent is actually the word for the type of picking used playing the guitar in that genre. It includes muting the sound with your palm just after you have played the note / chord. Also you need very low tuning and 7 or 8 string guitars in most cases.

This is the sound the Djent style makes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrhyQJNC7z8

Notice how the notes are killed after they play them. That is Djent.
