I think you're correct there Brunon, imo.

I think Periphery are an amazing group of musicians, Misha writes wonderful melodies over some astonishing riffs, and the drummer Matt is sooo good.

You know what it is for me? I don't like it when people give themselves their own nicknames, I have no problems with it other than grade school stuff where someone is decides that everyone now should call him 'Cobra' or whatever... I'm ok with it if it's given to you by someone else (Beav) or whatever and it sticks, but I just keep meeting people who are like 'call me king of the wind', or 'my real name is Harold, but just call me 'Decepticon' ...' you know what I mean? Again, I'm cool with nicknames if everyone decides for you, but I've always been bugged by self imposed nicknames.

Again, this is an ABSOLUTELY personal thing that has no basis in the djent scene, again... Animals As Leaders, Periphery, Chimp Spanner, Tesseract... AMAZING BANDS And they all deserve respect and success for doing something great.

... it's just embarrassing to be forced to call someone a name they've given themselves. I don't know where that came from for me... some new kid at school ' Hi, call me emperor palpatine' ..or something... then it was always weird to say 'ummm, excuse me emperor palpatine, but could I borrow your blue pencil crayon?'

I just worked with people that had self imposed nicknames this year, and when I asked their real name they got totally bugged out, so I had to grit my teeth and call them by a dumb name they gave themselves and it just makes the interactions uncomfortable.

So...yeah. I've got issues. :) I apologize if it seemed like a slight against the actual scene or bands, I love what they are doing.

No, I'm right there with ya. I would feel like a complete douche refering to myself by a nickname. I don't know hoe people do it.

"Hi, I'm Sting."

"No, fuck you. You're Gordon."

I keep thinking about that 'Seinfeld' episode where George tries to get everyone to call him "T-Bone."

Personaly I got tired of the whole Djent thing before it even got this popular, but probably just because im a bitter dude :P I was really into Periphery back when Casy Sabol was still singing but now there's so many bands doing tha same thing it ruined it for me a little. Still enjoy it but I don't know... It felt really fresh and new then but not anymore. Guess it's ineviteble (don't mind my spelling, I'm not a 100%) when something blows up and gets big. Bet Messuggah isn't super thrilled to be bundeled together with those bands as Djent either. They pass the test of time imo and still amaze me. That's a sign of really great music I think!

an important FYI here, Bulb didn't invent the term Djent, he just used it a lot.
I hate the term too, it's been so overused and due to the nature of bulbs/peripherys popularity everyone is trying to make that kind of music. All I see on recording forums nowadays is RATE MY DJENT TONE, I MADE A DJENT song etc.
I remember both bulb and acle posting awesome tunes years and years ago on the meshuggah forums and admiring their original approach and songwriting ability, now everyone wants in and most of it is rubbish

If you're onto the "djent" used as a genre name I don't think it was deliberate (on Misha's part at least) - more like frequently used onomatopeia that got out of control and spontaneously ended up as a scene symbol. As I said, personally I don't see anything wrong with that. And I love neologisms.

On the other hand, I'm not a native English speaker, so maybe I just can't comprehend how annoying the words is. Yeah, I definitely overlooked this possibility :>

Wait, so it's "gent"? How fucking pretentious is that 'dj-' spelling?! Added to the stupid nicknames.. I'm put off already.

Does anyone know who coined the phrase in the first place? Depending on the nationality of whoever came up with the fucking work, if it's spelt phonetically it could well be the correct spelling.
Either way, IT AIN'T FUCKING ROCK N' ROLL!!

It's the same problem I had with 'Lollapalooza' ...when things get forced into current vernacular, I kind of automatically get turned off. That's my trip from ages ago.

That being said, again... my problem is with THAT, not the genre or the bands. I think that what Misha in particular is doing is really a bright hope for a new generation of musicians and he has my full support and respect.

...however, I have to call him Misha if that's ok :)

He's turning to be a very respected person in this business it seems. I know he's getting involved in quite a lot lately and I'm sure we'll see a lot more of him even after Periphery (If/when that happens). It will be interesting to follow! I try to stay tuned on these kinds of things as much as I can by bugging my only American contact who knows anything :P The European and American scene is quite different really. But Periphery (among others) is getting some attention over here now too for sure!

I believe it's pronounced like 'gent' out of gentlement, but with a kind of harder soft G and you have do it as fast as possible.

I wholeheartedly agree that nicknames need to be earned, not given.

I do, however stupid the name of the genre is, hope that it eclipses death/metal/koalacore as the new cool metal genre. There were a few gems out of *core, but it's well past it's prime to be put out to pasture.

I hope for something different. Don't know what really. Anyone listened to a band called Stairland? That was an awesome way to take the Messhuggah kind of influence and make something different. Loved the industry elements and intesity they brought to the table! I want more music like that so if anyone knows more bands like them I would be happy to know!
