The place to speak about Dev's current projects, and everything yet to come

word of mouth is the best way of getting people introduced to Devin Townsend. That's all, no more, no less.

But you can't just say "thats the best way to do it because thats how I did it." It doesn't work like that because not everyone has a brother or sister or a friend who likes Dev and can burn them a cd. Not everyone likes bands related to Dev. So by this fan generated word mouth thing, those people just miss out. They might like him, they might hate him. But if they don't hear it they'll never know. Why not give the opportunity to those people as well?

An idea like Ppinkhams is just about supporing the artist so he can do more. If people are worried about what being mainstream would mean...it shouldn't make any difference. If they're asking themselves that, they should really think about why they listen to Dev in the first place.

I'm still completely of your opinion, ppinkham. There are far too few people that know Devin Townsend (who could heighten his popularity by only "spreading the word").

ppinkham wrote:The new version of "Kingdom" Dev plays is awesome. If he ever decides to re-record some of the old stuff (which he has mentioned before) that song needs to be on it, and be pushed as the first single. He took a great song and made it epic.

Especially on Kingdom:
I completely adore this version, but on the other hand I honestly don't think there are that many potential fans out there liking this kind of "opera voice" he uses in Kingdom Reloaded. I also know quite a few people that like his music, but can't stand his (quite extraordinary) voice, especially when screaming.

Some people even don't like his voice AND his music, like my girlfriend who is very much into rock/metal and good vocalists. But she says a screaming Devy reminds her of an angry child  and his solo-project music annoys her because when she hears it, she can't resist imaging angels flying around with all that dreamy and overloaded electronic wall of sound etc .... and I get her point, although I try to convince her so hard

Is that what the kids are calling it these days?

Kids do love their crazy euphemisms.

I don't think anything can make Dev really, really popular. He's too diverse to ever be extremely popular. I'm sure he would love for more people to hear his music and come to his shows, though. Plus, a little extra pocket change is generally welcomed by anyone.

Most bands/musicians make their money from ticket sales and merchandising. Dev actually lost money on this last US headlining tour. I'm sure Devin would love to be able to continue to headline his shows, and at least break even.

As I've said several times in this thread, only Dev knows what he wants. I'm just going off of things said in various interviews, and just putting myself in Dev's shoes. I know that I would like to be in a financial position that allowed me to not have to worry about my financial position, and just do the things I want, worry free.

I think it is debatable that forcing anything to be mainstream is even possible. People either like something or they don't. You can't force them to buy CD's or tickets. Putting the spotlight on something is not forcing anything. It's merely exposing something to people who may not have ever had the chance to see it otherwise. If people don't like something, they are not going to invest time or money in it. Going on a TV show isn't forcing anything to be mainstream. I see a ton of bands on late night shows that I have never heard of, or never hear from again. I've seen a few that I wouldn't have heard of otherwise, and I am extremely happy I did.

I did see this one guy on the Tonight Show once. He was ok, I guess.

Now, the fans didn't push for this to happen. Steve Vai's label and management were a bit more pro-active then Dev's last management. He does have new management now, and he made the change because he knew that more could be done to get his music out there. I just hope they are a little more aggressive and accomplish the things Dev wants them to. Again, what that may be, only Dev knows.

Devin didn't explode into the mainstream after this. Neither did Vai. I'm sure they sold a few CD's, though. Probably a few more tickets as well.

Then Dev put Jay's phone in his ass, and that was the end to any future tonight show appearances. lol

Agreed. Most people these days hate vibrato. I mean, I understand...I hate it when power metal singers warble every single syllable, but when done right...it demonstrates a singer's control and evokes feeling. I just don't get why it is so avoided...look at Periphery for instance. Not ONCE on that album is there a single voice inflection...like they purposefully avoided it. I dunno, maybe they just feel it suits their music better to not have it, but I think it's more about avoiding possible cheese factor. I'd love to discuss this more.

There's a line between singing with passion and just showing how good you are.

Devin manages to stay within the passion part of the line.
