This last year I was lucky to get to see Dev and band in L.A. and I went to the VIP meet and greet deal where Dev played some songs and talked and signed stuff. So, it hadn't even occurred to me that Dev would do autographs (cause i'm a dork, mostly) and besides, I feel like autographs are kind of weird, like, "See, I have proof I met him!!" It doesn't bother me if others get one, I just never feel like I should do it. But, here I was in line and I really just wanted to take a picture and giddily tell him how much I like his music and stuff.

Then I had a good idea. I would have him sign my iPad. See, I love my iPad. And, what better thing to have Dev sign than something that I love and is beautiful and well-designed, just like Dev's music.

So, I did. He signed it right on the back on the Apple logo. And now i'm geeeking out on the iPad 2. I might just wait and save my money to buy it later, or wait for iPad 3 even. But, then, I thought I'd ask...

Is there any extra value to anyone here in an iPad with Dev's autograph on it? It's a well-cared for 64gb 3G model with an ATT chip inside. It has an almost imperceptible ding on one upper corner from a slight impact. It works perfectly.

Part of me wants to keep it because it's signed. I have kids that love playing with it (but I never let them because I'm a selfish wiener) and might pass it down. But, if another Dev fan was interested, I would be interested to know. Finally, I know I don't post a lot as I have a busy job and stuff, but I'm a long time member of the forum. I apologize in advance if there's something uncool about asking this.

And to be clear, if I decide to sell it, it will go on eBay and i'll get what I get. Honestly, autographs aren't worth anything to me. I got to see the man got my picture with him, and i'm happy with that. I just thought someone would want it and it would be nice to ask.

I'm just saying that if you like your iPad enough to get Dev to sign it, why sell it as soon as the new one comes out? If you wern't satisfied with the spec in the first place, why did you even get it? Maybe the panic to upgrade to an ever so slightly different model is something I'll never understand; I only replace stuff when it's beyond all repair.

Not sure if this is true but even so...personally I think it's logic that the longer you can hold out (since you already have a perfectly functioning iPad, do you really NEED the new one just want it for a few extra features) the better, because technology is getting better pretty quickly as time goes on, why not wait and get something kickass for the same price?

It's a neverending wheel of supply and demand. It doesn't matter how little the changes are when an updated version of something comes out, people still go spastic for it.

I mean, yeah. I nearly caved in. My Creative Zen Vision:M got nicked two years ago and with the insurance I thought "Imma buy myself a beast". You know, something that I can put thousands of tunes on and cram with films and TV shows to watch on my commutes (which can be a sucky 2 hours there and back at times). A quick look at the iPod touches and I concluded that they were far too expensive for what I wanted (ooooh but you can put iPhone apps on it and it has a magical touch screen dealio! Big deal.), and 60GB+ wasn't their bag; so I went to Currys and asked for a high capacity media player that wasn't an iPod. I went for the Archos 5 250GB. Literally a WEEK later, the Archos 5 Android came out, with 500GB capacity and all that jazz. Did I get a ballache over it? No. Did I consider selling my 5 to get the 5 Android? VERY briefly. At the end of the day, the 5 already does far much more than I want it to do, why am I gonna waste more money to get something that does even MORE stuff than I want it to do? I don't even need an MP3 player in the first place let alone one with a Satnav in it.

I'm not posting this as an anti-Apple consumer, I don't care what computers people buy, I just don't buy Apple stuff cause I don't like it. Same reason why I don't buy celery. But eh, maybe there's a much bigger picture I don't seem to be getting.

Each to their own. Myself, the only Apple product I own is an iPod classic, but that's cause probably cause I'm poor. If I had the cash, sure I'd probably buy an iPhone or maybe even a Macbook...I'm not a huge Apple fan either but Macs have exceptional battery life and my current computer lasts 10 minutes on battery when charged to 100%, and you can always run Windows off a Mac with boot camp, so...

Pretty much everyone I can think of has bought a new phone in the last year or so, and just as many swear by Android-based phones as they do iPhones. The thing is, no one will ever invent the perfect device, because even if every phone had a GPS and media player and web browser and touch screen and 3D camera and whatever other crap people deem necessary to have on their person at all times, people would still say, this device has everything but I don't WANT a gyroscope or touch screen, I like buttons, etc. I'm the kind of person that buys something and sticks with it til it craps out. I have a big fat brick of a phone that was once a popular model, nowadays I constantly get funny looks and people saying, "You still have that?!" and asking why I don't have the latest whatsamajigger, but my phone is cheap to keep and does all I want it to, so why would I get a new one?

You're certainly getting a more controlled product with apple, so there's quality assurance in that... I guess (they all tend to have problems and not really be easily diagnosed when they exhibit said problems). They, as a company, have such tremendous vertical integration that they are the number one source of their own repairs. Take all that for what you will.

You can get a similar, if not better product for cheaper, but it will tend to have less of a battery life, be more vulnerable to attack and probably a little less shiny. Up to you, but I think as long as you keep your nose clean, there's really no contest.

I'm a million miles away from ever touching one of these things/affording/understanding one so this is maybe a very silly thing to suggest or sacrilige or something.

I'm good with old desktop PCs, mountain bike building, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon analysis by IE+ GCMS, multiparameter water quality monitoring probes, fresh vegetables and loose stools but I am totally out of the loop with smartphones/smartbricks.

Most apple products are designed in such a way that the general consumer wouldn't have a prayer of taking it apart or trying to repair it. I'm telling you, the first mac mini I had was unbelievable. I wanted to upgrade the ram and was spinning it all around trying to find a single screw or some kind of fastener that held it together. You actually need a special tool (however, a drywall knife works perfectly) to remove the housing. Once inside, it is a fucking marvel how well laid out the components are. If you can use teh google, they are easy to work on but they are certainly designed to discourage the average DIYer.
Speaking of build quality and battery life, I have the 1st gen of the unibody machined aluminum macbooks. It has run pretty constantly since I bought it (sometimes for weeks at a time). I have never had a single issue and the battery life is still in the 8hr range when fully charged. Again, I am amazed at the build quality and reliability of the products. They get way too ahead of themselves with new generations of products every year but any mac I have ever owned has performed flawlessly without ever needing to take it in for service.

There sure is. Even if you don't like celery in and of itself, you can't really make a decent stock or risotto without using it - it's there to balance other flavours; it's own flavour is not noticeable but the tones it draws out in other ingredients is very important.
Also if you have Apple products and celery and some walnuts you are pretty much good for Waldorf salad.

I honestly like the "OMG GOTTA HAVE IIIIIT" culture. Mind you, I tend to directly benefit from it.
I have pretty much every major console from the NES on and only personally bought the Wii and PS3. The others were results of agreements to let guys whose girlfriends got to the "it's me or the console and 100 games" point play the old stuff if they came by.
Around when my (free) IPod Nano's battery died, a mate upgraded to an IPhone 4. His work supplied that and the previous 3G and never asked for the old unit back. So he decided to research stripping cellular service as completely as possible and gave me the resulting 8gb IPod touch.
If it weren't for all the free tech I've got, I'd still be using my Apple //e hacked to accomodate a network interface card with a text based browser, probably.
